I'll be joining you guys this summer. :D Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: MaterialHandlerMike on January 05, 2014, 10:08:48 PM Looking forward to meeting a fellow RF Canuck. Didn't really get to hang out today; place was pretty busy.

It had better have several mentions of the illustrious and king of the consoles, 32x. Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: Fleach on January 06, 2014, 11:14:18 PM I'm listening as I type, and I just got to the "eye balling a trade and seeing something you want" part.
So... Do you guys think there is an etiquette that is to be followed when it comes to buying games? As much as I'd like to interrupt a trade to buy something I would wait until the store and client have done their thing and then let the anticipation brew until that particular game is available for sale. Crabby, do you see difference in the people who are gamers and those who are collectors? Do you, as a reseller, react differently to those two camps? And lastly, podcast crew, I like the main topic first format. If you stuck to that format you wouldn't hear any complaints from me. Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: Crabmaster2000 on January 07, 2014, 09:00:01 AM I find it a bit frustrating when people gather around and start eyeballing a trade in for two reasons:
1. It hurts my negotiating power. I by no means want to rip someone off, but I do need to get a good price on items coming into the store in order to stay in business. If half of a trade in seems "sold" to people before I get a chance to throw a dollar amount out then the price the customer has in mind can suddenly jump. Occasionally to unrealistic levels. Which means there is a greater chance they leave the store with an amount they arn't entirely happy with or even with their games. 2. I like to be able to clean and test most items that come into the store. I've had people say they don't mind grabbing something "as is" from a trade in that just came in and then show up the next day upset that the game didn't work (and often just needs a quick alcohol swabbing). I'd say if you see something you're interested in come in the door while you are shopping, just be patient and wait until the customer is not only done the transaction with the store owner, but has left the building. Then ask the shop keeper if you can take a look or that you are interested in a particular title and try and work out your deal for it. Collector's and Gamer's aren't all that different to me. They both behave surprisingly similar. The only differences are things like a gamer not being as concerned with completeness or condition of an item as a collector. Collectors are also often a lot more knowledgeable when it comes to price and rarity than the gamers (obviously), so they are much more likely to try and negotiate price, buy large lots or scoop up any item that isn't likely to show up in the store often. Both are willing to pony up for items that they are genuinely excited about though and both groups are willing to come in often anticipating that special item to show up. Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: Fleach on January 07, 2014, 09:11:24 AM Your stance on the trade-in etiquette is very reasonable. I can see you try to be fair to the customer while also being fair to yourself (you have overhead and other expenses).
The gamers and collectors of Prince George must be really happy to have you around. I enjoyed your bit on the main topic this month. Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: MaterialHandlerMike on January 07, 2014, 10:24:55 AM I know I have often been in the position of standing at the counter when a huge desirable trade-in lot comes in. I think the first couple times it happened, I probably broke etiquette out of excitement, but seeing Crabby kindly but sternly chastise a few kids (who seem to be the worst offenders) I quickly learned the error of my ways. Although it can be painful (especially if there are multiple interested vultures....i mean parties) to wait until the customer is gone, I always do before starting buying negotiations.

I really appreciate it Mike. I know if I was in your position there would be A LOT of restraint involved, but it really makes things go a lot smoother. Plus it keeps you in my good books, which typically means I'm willing to do you favors ;) Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: Duke.Togo on January 07, 2014, 10:59:16 AM Crabby certainly has it correct. When I am in stores, I respect the guys running it. I know they have a job to do and families to feed, and I want their store to do well so they can keep supplying me with what I am after, as well as just honestly making some friendships with them.
I've said it before. Being a successful, long term collector is all about relationships. Plus, that is really the best side of the hobby. The games are fun, but if you just had them all alone, it would suck. Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: singlebanana on January 07, 2014, 02:41:08 PM Yep, it's hard not to be that vulture when cool stuff comes in, but I tend to stand my distance. The owner and employees of the store pretty much know what I am looking for, so they will usually put it aside for me, which is nice. I've found that I still get good deals and even when I know what they paid, I am very respectful in my offer to ensure that he is treated fairly. Like Duke said, they have to put food on the table for their family, pay overhead, etc.
This was probably my favorite episode of the CollectorCast because I think, as Bil said it best (sorry I know this quote is way off), "We all kind of feel like we are part of Crabby's store." Though I have sent him a few things, most of all, I have really enjoyed watching and hearing about his success. I'm really glad the store has taken off as well as it has and think it's great that the had the gumption to take the leap of faith to open it. Continued good luck sir. :) Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: RetroRage on January 07, 2014, 10:05:46 PM Crabs have you had any customers come in and use your store as a meeting place to buy/sell/trade to one another?
Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: Crabmaster2000 on January 07, 2014, 11:16:51 PM Crabs have you had any customers come in and use your store as a meeting place to buy/sell/trade to one another? Not to my knowledge, but I have facilitated a couple personal transactions like that between some of my regulars. They were kind enough to ask me if I'd buy something from one of them and sell it to another since they were having trouble meeting up. I just passed the games along for no charge. Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: RetroRage on January 10, 2014, 11:49:05 PM Bil, what didn't you like about GTA 4?
GTA 5 is fundamentally the same as GTA 4 as far as the layout, graphics, controls, etc....but there are several improvements. For starters you can change between 3 characters each with their own unique stats. One thing I think is really charming is that after a certain point you can switch between characters whenever you want, and when switch your character will be randomly doing something unexpected when the game loads up, like you'll be waking up in a dumpster, about to get into a fight with gang members, walking out of a hotel room post-hookering...all sorts of strange things that make it feel like your character has been living in the San Andreas world doing his own thing while you were playing with another character, rather than just sleeping in a bed or standing on a street corner waiting for you switch to him. Also the writing is better. I actually care about the characters I interact with throughout the game. The missions are more fun too and you have more control over how you can pull off heists (for some but not all missions). There are a bunch more random interactions with people in the streets, random events that pop up out of nowhere, tons of weird side missions....and the cops are harder to out-run. Even one star can be tough to get rid of. I definitely recommend it.... and play for longer than 10 hours this time. Since you were curious about this game, here's Wizard of Oz for SNES: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTLUOgP21UY I loved the Podcast like usual. Keep em coming. Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: GrayGhost81 on January 18, 2014, 04:57:36 PM Gentlemen,
An excellent show as usual. It made me nostalgic for the days when I used to piss in my Nintendo. Crabby, I wish I could visit your store. I really admire your entrepreneurial spirit and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing you speak about the ups and downs of being a new business owner. Duke, I really appreciate the kind words about our podcast and the well wishes for my co-host. I'll be sure to pass them along. This is one of the many reasons I love this site. You guys are like friends to me. I was listening to the show with my wife in the car and we both got a little choked up when you started talking about my friend. Hopefully he'll come out of this and we'll be recording again soon and I know you'll continue to support us like you always have. Definitely digging having the main topic before small scores. Also, ya'll need to check out Skylanders because it's freaking awesome. Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: Tynstar on February 04, 2014, 05:05:53 PM The part about my soon to be born twins is very funny. The part about my beard was really funny. I am having twin girls. Everyone I have talked to said twins are great.
Is I had a boy I am sure it would look something like this Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: Duke.Togo on February 04, 2014, 05:09:36 PM LOL!

Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: Zagnorch on February 20, 2014, 09:30:20 PM Just want to add that I am a Club Nintendo poster set man. You're not alone, bil and crabby! On a very belated related note: You can indeed choose a Gold-level prize if you make Platinum. Which is what I did when I chose the desk calendar when I made Plat for the first time last year. I'd gotten the desk calendar each of the last three years when I only made Gold, and I wanted to keep the streak going. I guess I'm just a creature of habit. And call me crazy, but I didn't find the LoZ soundtrack CD all that attractive. BTW I'm already at Gold for 2014, and I just might make Plat for the second straight year. If I do, will I eschew the Plat-level prizes for the 2015 desk calendar? Probably... 'Late Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: Izret101 on March 07, 2014, 02:01:20 PM I forgot a gameboy outside and it went through a rainstorm. Grabbed it leaned it on a corner and drained out what seemed like enough water to fill the entire inner cavity of the system and cart. Fired it up the next day :D
Also every time the ep gets bleeped i laugh. The funny thing is i don't really notice you guys don't swear and i probably wouldn't notice if you did. But as soon as it gets bleeped its like "OH BOY BAD WORD!" and my amusement level increases and i am immediately 8 years old again. Just over 1 hour in. Also as far as the soda thing. The local shop near me would actually stock up on them when they were on sale or buy in bulk and make a decent profit just selling cans. Buy 36-48 cans (depending on sale) for ~12$s sell each can for a buck a piece. Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: Tynstar on March 10, 2014, 10:26:13 AM If Izret is ever at your house dont let him drink soda. Bad things randomly happen when he drinks soda.
Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: Izret101 on March 10, 2014, 10:42:32 AM I think my body was reacting prematurely to a roofie.
Coughing soda all over your living room probably saved my life. LOL Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: Duke.Togo on March 12, 2014, 06:19:33 PM I'm sure that for the most part, people wouldn't care about cursing on the show, but I have received messages from listeners thanking us for doing a show that is clean. Most other podcasts I listen to don't, and it is nice to have something that I wouldn't mind my kids hearing.
Mental note made: Izret + soda = disastrous mess. Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: retrosportsgamer on August 26, 2014, 12:49:21 PM As far as FIVE HOUR podcasts go, this one didn't dip in the slightest.
I also went with the posters :nono: Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: Duke.Togo on August 26, 2014, 09:38:50 PM As far as FIVE HOUR podcasts go, this one didn't dip in the slightest. Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: stillplayingnes on October 14, 2014, 11:05:18 PM Well I'm through 19 episodes. After listening to 18 and missing Crabby I was glad to hear him back and hear the store did really well at opening.
This is the first episode I skipped the scores section. I really want to get "caught up" on the episodes and I feel this is the quickest way I can do it. Problem is there's a lot of nostalgic chat back and forth between the hosts during the scores section so I may have to go back and listen to those sections at some point. Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 19 Post by: Zagnorch on October 14, 2014, 11:32:09 PM Well I'm through 19 episodes. Problem is there's a lot of nostalgic chat back and forth between the hosts during the scores section so I may have to go back and listen to those sections at some point. Well, you'll be happy to know that, in the last few shows, they've all but eliminated the Small Scores section... though they did release a Small Scores special a few months back. If you want to go through the shows more quickly-- and I mean literally so-- listen to them on YouTube. Click Settings (gear icon) on the lower right corner of the viewing screen, and select 1.5 on the Speed drop-down. Now you can listen to an entire CollectorCast episode in 2/3rds the time! Even at that speed, I find the hosts' voices very comprehensible. BTW if you've ever wondered what the CollectorCast would sound like if the hosts were drunk, set the speed to 0.5. Now Crabs is even more mellow than before! Who knew such a thing was possible? |
