Title: Microsoft XBox 360/One 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: GrayGhost81 on September 29, 2013, 12:41:32 PM I figured I'd put up a companion thread to my PS+ thread.
For those who don't know Microsoft has been making two games available for free each month to Gold subscribers. The games so far have been Fable III, Defense Grid: The Awakening, Assassin's Creed II, Crackdown, Dead Rising 2 (with Case Zero DLC), and Magic The Gathering 2013. The current freebie is Rainbow Six: Vegas and on Oct 1 it will be Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes. Microsoft has a very long way to go match the value of Playstation Plus. Dead Rising 2 was definitely a step in the right direction, but Rainbow Six: Vegas (originally released in 2006) was a huge step backward. Trust me, I may be a cheerleader for Sony sometimes but better free games is a good thing for everyone. I want to see Microsoft improve this program. Anyway I'll post the new releases as they come just like I do in the PS+ thread, so check back on the first and fifteenth each month. Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Duke.Togo on September 29, 2013, 04:44:41 PM I'll agree that the free games have been pretty lackluster so far, and honestly I haven't played any of them, even though I have downloaded them. The only ones that I liked I had already played.
For those that are newer to they system though, there have been a few worthwhile titles in there. Crackdown is still great even after all this time. Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Tynstar on September 30, 2013, 12:59:03 PM I went and bought two used copies of Rainbow Six: Vegas. I refuse to download full copies of retail games.
Crackdown is still one of my favorite 360 games. Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on September 30, 2013, 05:56:27 PM Halo 3 is Oct 16
BOY OH BOY HOW GENEROUS OF THEM! Something i did see noted in comments was that the download version sufferes from horrendous load times and was never patched to fix it. I wouldn't know since there are like 150 million copies of the game floating around i don't see the need to download it. Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: GrayGhost81 on September 30, 2013, 08:17:47 PM Halo 4 would be a more impressive choice.

Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Tynstar on October 01, 2013, 12:12:41 PM Darkness 3 and I am sold.
Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: GrayGhost81 on October 16, 2013, 10:43:11 AM As Izret mentioned, today's freebie is Halo 3. It's an okay game if you missed it when it was released in 2007.
Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on October 16, 2013, 03:07:48 PM To confirm, the game was never optimized for hard drive install, since that came about after its release. As a result, instead of paying fees to patch it (and hence modify a risky portion of the game), they told users not to install to HDD. Doesn't help when Microsoft releases it as a GoD title.
Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: JerryGreenwood on October 21, 2013, 03:27:47 PM Crackdown is kinda good. Haven't played the others.

Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on November 16, 2013, 06:04:54 PM Games with Gold is supposed to be carrying over to the Xbox One.
Which is shocking since One is not supposed to be backwards compatible.... Anyways what i came here for... I've heard Shoot Many Robots is good but my measly 4GB is filled up. I have Shoot Many Robots and one of the games from last month backed up waiting for space.

Ah, just came on to post exactly that! http://www.joystiq.com/2013/12/30/january-games-with-gold-sleeping-dogs-lara-croft-guarding-the/ I'm blown away by these selections. Ironically PS+ members were able to enjoy Sleeping Dogs about six months ago. Just sayin' Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on January 01, 2014, 12:59:10 PM Sleeping dogs DLC is also half off at the moment:

This is the first one I've been legit excited about because of all the positive press it got when it came out in 2010. Sounds like something I can play with Mrs. Grayghost. My gold account is actually going to expire soon and I think I'm going to let it as I generally don't play games online anymore.
Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on January 17, 2014, 12:13:01 AM Game is probably better couch co-op than it is online co-op. Not sure if it was the other guys relatively poor connection but i had problems with levels not loading properly when playing online.

I just bought 3 copies of Dead Island to play co-op with some friends. Granted, I didn't pay much for them, but still.....
Ah well, still cool that Microsoft is finally tossing us something other than 5+ year old games Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: GrayGhost81 on February 14, 2014, 03:24:52 PM On Sunday 02/16, Toy Soldiers: Cold War will be made available. On another note, I had to renew my gold subscription because I forgot the bastards have Netflix behind a pay wall and my 360 is the only Netflix-enabled device in this particular room. First world problems. At least I'll have an interest in continuing to curate this thread, with Izret's help of course ;).
Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: GrayGhost81 on February 28, 2014, 11:10:19 AM Looks like the first game for March will be Civilization: Revolution. Yep, it's old but if you missed it the first time around I highly recommend it. Basically a reskinned version of the first Civ from way back when. I wasted entire weekends on this game. Very addictive.
https://twitter.com/worthplaying/status/439113891776196608 Can't find any info on the second game for the month. Izret, have you seen anything? Perhaps Quake 4? Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on February 28, 2014, 11:29:23 AM I have not heard anything definite yet.
Civ:Rev i don't own so i'll likely queue it up and never actually download it like all the other games on demand stuff. Reminder Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on March 18, 2014, 10:37:56 PM Hey maybe things will start getting better:
Quote "When Microsoft first revealed Games with Gold, which would provide Xbox Live Gold subscribers 2 free titles each month, users cheered it as a long-awaited answer to Sony’s PlayStation Plus program. However, as the free games were announced and released, many criticized Games with Gold’s offerings as being too old or not up to par with what Sony was giving users. While PlayStation Plus members often receive new titles shortly after release, including some AAA releases, Xbox Live Gold subscribers are disappointed with what is perceived as bottom of the barrel offerings in comparison. Since most Games with Gold selections tend to be older, many users have already purchased said titles or possessed no interest in the first place. Up until this point, Microsoft has offered little to ease the disappointment. However, during the Q&A portion after his SXSW Gaming panel, Microsoft Game Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer addressed many of these concerns. He emphasized that while the two programs have obvious similarities, there is one key difference: Xbox Live Gold users get to keep their downloaded title, while PlayStation Plus subscribers lose their games if their subscription lapses. Spencer claimed that the “business around Games with Gold, for us, is just fundamentally different from some of the other programs that are out there, which does put a different financial picture on,” and because the games are a permanent part of a user’s collection, there are different financial restrictions that dictate what can be offered. Even with this reasoning, Spencer admitted that the program could improve and he has already taken steps, including monthly meetings with the team responsible for the program, to make it “something that feels, at least, more true to what [he] thinks Games with Gold should look like with the constraints that are there.” Source: http://www.xblafans.com/phil-spencer-clarifies-aim-of-games-with-gold-program-74420.html Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: techwizard on March 19, 2014, 04:00:24 AM that's really interesting, i didn't realise GwG were permanent gifts

It is FANTASTIC. I played through the entire Gold edition on Steam. When I found out it was coming out on Xbox One I really wanted to play it again but I don't love buying games twice. Now that it's free, I'm thrilled I get to play it again. The reviews I've read say that it't not just a coat of paint, the game has been tweaked in many areas. I really can't wait to get home and play this again.
Also, BATTLEBLOCK THEATER! Only reason I haven't picked it up yet is because I was waiting for a price drop and I wanted to find a coop buddy, Price drop, check. I suppose I'd get more out of our One if we didn't get as much out of the PS4, or even the Wii U for that matter. Aside from Peggle 2 and a little bit of Titanfall, everything else we'd want to play on the One, we play on PS4. Though my Love and I are looking forward to the Master Chief Collection. :D Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360/One 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on September 04, 2014, 10:16:23 PM Well according to the Xbox newsletter that i recently got the average 360 owner earned 2x as much GS as the average One owner.
So it seems the One is winning the war of not being a gaming platform on all fronts. YAY ALL IN ONE MEDIA CENTER! I'll get a system when the harddrives are larger, the bugs have been worked out and the primary focus of every MS isn't about a new movie/tv app or restoring features that they removed from the 360. "Snapping" back over to Netflix on my other "app" driven multimedia center. My PC. Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360/One 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Duke.Togo on September 04, 2014, 10:50:10 PM I've certainly enjoyed my XBO so far, but it's seen as much play as the 360 this year. That will change in the fall, but so far this new console gen has been pretty blah.
Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360/One 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: wildbil52 on September 05, 2014, 08:28:08 AM The first year the 360 was out I owned about 3 games: Burnout Revenge, Dead Rising, and Gears of War or Rainbow Six Vegas, can't remember. The first year the Xbox One is out, I will have purchased about 3 games for it: ACIV, Forza, and Far Cry 4 (maybe NHL 15). It's the first year. It's gonna be OK. People are losing their minds over the first mile of a marathon.

Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360/One 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on September 05, 2014, 04:04:20 PM Oh also worth noting!
By downloading and playing the Games with Gold stuff you do get MS space bucks points eventually deposited into your account. I believe it was 1000 points for playing 10 hours of the game over 2 weeks. Another 2000 points(i believe in addition to whatever points you would already receive) if the game has DLC and you buy it within the 2 weeks of the GwG becoming available. The ability to create stages/characters/banners/music has lead to some really cool stuff. 8bit Marios to PS1 era Sony emblems to a Swastika over a rainbow PRIDE banner with dicks (that last one will likely get the creator in trouble. It breaks a whole bunch of rules) All of it can be shared with QR codes. My first thoughts on it was Rocket Riot Rugby stages as well. But it is quite different. Rocket Riot you control one guy against a team The levels are destructible The enemies are killable It is more about moving from point A to point B than it is about actually scoring There are no rules It was not fun. What they have in common 8Bit sprites 2D world Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360/One 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on January 31, 2015, 08:50:26 PM Apparently i had things flip flopped

Child of Light was great on 360 (glitched story related achievements forcing a replay almost ruined it for me personally) Looking forward to stacking. GoW:J i am in the minority on. I really liked it. Seems like most big Gears fans did not. (Same thing goes for RE: Operation Racoon City) Unfortunately it doesn't seem to get the same support as far as Special Events are concerned. Hopefully the GwG spurs them to make them more regular. Terraria was pretty cool. Already own it on the 360 though. AC is a series that i have only played online. I've only heard good things but the online portion of it killed my interest. One day i'll give it a fair shot. Army of Two i am looking forward to also. Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360/One 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on March 27, 2015, 12:04:33 PM Iz, we need to get on the SE for GoW: J. I think i've gotten 2 this year. I need to figure out which save is my good one again. Title: Re: Microsoft XBox 360/One 'Games With Gold' Discussion Thread Post by: kamakazi20012 on March 28, 2015, 12:26:53 AM Maybe it's just my account having issues, but be careful of Black Flag. It's not a bad game...it's actually a great game. But the darn thing locked up on me the other night and I have not been able to get it to load under my profile on my 360. It hangs at the title screen, system lock down and all. The second disc works fine. Already spent over 8 hours with XBOX support (twitter and on phone) trying to figure out what the heck is going on and how it can be fixed. Everything has been done and went so far as to remove all files off my 360...as if I just bought the system. The game still refuses to play after downloading my profile from XBOX. Those planning on downloading AC IV do yourself a favor...back up your profile to a thumb drive or something. I don't want to see anyone else go through what I'm going through. I just thought I would pass it along to fellow gamers. I was really enjoying that game, too, and maybe it can be fixed soon so I can play it again. And I'm using a disc version from Wal-Mart...only a few days old. New.

@Tynstar: I agree with Bill. AC3 is terrible compared to the other games in the series. The payoff for completing the game is terrible compared to all that it asks you to do.
