Title: It's almost October again.....time to talk Horror films
Post by: singlebanana on September 25, 2013, 09:18:28 AM
I had a lot of fun last year discussing horror films with a few members, so I thought I'd put up another thread.  The wife and I have instituted a weekly movie night at our house with about 20 friends (only a few usually show up). We bought a nice popcorn popper and some big plastic popcorn buckets. It's a lot of fun, and with 2 kids, it allows us to spend more time with friends since most of our weekends are pretty packed with errands, sports, etc.  Tonight we are watching "Over the Top"...Ha!  Anyway, I have prepared my list for the October films, so I'll see what you guys think:

October 2nd, 8:30 p.m. - "Chopping Mall" (1986)
October 9th, 8:30 p.m. - "Deep Red" (1975) or "Tenebre" (1982) [decided by vote]
October 16th, 8:30 p.m. - "Ghostbusters" (1984) or "The Frighteners" (1996) [decided by vote]
October 23rd, 8:30 p.m. - "The Brood" (1979)
October 30th, 8:30 p.m. - "The Blob" (1958)

**there will also be a special screening of Fulci's "City of the Living Dead" (1980) at some point very soon.

Might I recommend some lesser known titles like:
Mister Frost (1990) If you can find a copy.  Very hard to locate.
Session 9 (2001) "Tensions rise within an asbestos cleaning crew as they work in an abandoned mental hospital with a horrific past that seems to be coming back."
Frozen (2010) "Three skiers are stranded on a chairlift and forced to make life-or-death choices that prove more perilous than staying put and freezing to death"
Midnight Movie (2008) "A midnight showing of an early 1970's horror movie turns to chaos when the Killer from the movie comes out of the film to attack those in the theater."

Or you could go classic with The Last Man on Earth (1964) or The Changeling (1980).

Depending on the crowd, you should check IMDB.  I love a great horror flick and can't help but to toss recommendations.

Oh yeah, recommendations welcome! My viewings are pretty much set, but I'll check out a few of these myself.

I looove horror movies. Especially older ones and B movies. Last year I streamed a movie each night of October for my online friends and it was awesome (until a certain hurricane knocked out my power). I try to watch differently themed stuff every year but I always remember to watch Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness and Sean of the Dead.

If you're into the classics, I'd recommend The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and the original Phantom of the Opera. Also classic Godzilla and Gamera is very amusing (or at least to me it is).

The Innkeepers is pretty good.

Double on Techie's recommendation of Last Man on Earth.  The closest to film translation to Richard Matheson's original story, I Am Legend.  You can actually feel the main character start to loose his sanity.  Vincent Price's every-man take on the protagonist comes off as smart and resourceful, yet normal.  I found this refreshing compared to the others that came in the future (who came off as either complete bad-asses or supermen).

Windchill is nice and scary.  Free on Crackle, too.

Yep, love the classics and I have all of those silent films in a collection: Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Phantom of the Opera, The Golem, etc. I also have Godzilla and the box set of the Universal Monsters Horror Collection that was put out several years ago and is currently OOP. My crowd is mixed and made up of a few people who really don't care for horror films. I have to go easy on a few of the nights (Ghostbusters, The Frighteners, The Blob) and like to use an Argento film, which typically combines elements of a murder mystery, to keep them coming.

I'll have to check out "Last Man on Earth" since I'm a big fan of Vincent Price. If you haven't seen "The Tingler," it's a must.

That's definitely the best adaptation of I am Legend.

My wife and I watch Trick R Treat (2007) every year on Halloween night. It is in my top five favorite movies ever and is slowly creeping up the list. I just love every second of it and for me it's one of those movies that seems like it's over in five minutes. We may make it a double feature with The Loved Ones (2009), which is also phenomenal but way more on the shocking/disturbing end of the spectrum where Trick R Treat is more fun/campy like Creepshow.

Oh yeah, Creepshow (1982) is awesome too.

Yeah, Trick R Treat is a fun viewing. I enjoy all of the little twists and turns and how the different parts play into the entire film. I actually have a copy of the graphic novel, which is really cool. Creepshow is a classic.

It's a little campy at times, but Island of Terror (1966) with Edward Judd and Peter Cushing.  The sound the monsters make is... queasy.

I'm hoping to watch a scary movie every night in October as well as play some horror based video games.
If anyone has kids Netflixs just added a few more seasons of Goosebumps. I watched a few episodes myself.
My favorite Halloween movie would have to be Monster Squad though

Yeah, pretty excited about watching that on Wednesday. It's campy, but campy is always good. I have a few people (including my wife) who really don't like "horror" films, so something over the top and silly typically works for my audience. Deep Red, Tenebre, and The Brood have sort of mystery elements to them, so that helps out as well. Ghostbuster, The Frighteners, and The Blob are very tame.

I saw that on iTunes the other day while checking to see if they had any sales on horror movies.  The premise sounded pretty solid.  I might pick it up when I do my annual sojourn to Best Buy to clean up on the sales they always have on horror movies this time of the year.

I started off the season by watching Paranorman with my wife and kid.  My daughter is finally getting to the point where she'll sit down and watch most of a movie before she has to get up and do something.  Later on after she went to bed and I popped in Slaughter High and The Video Dead.  Both movies are just the right amount of cheese.

I've started October in earnest with some older horror movies.  I picked up one of those 50 movie horror packs by Mill Creek a couple of years ago and I've been watching a bunch of them.  So far I've watched Carnival of Souls, One Body too Many, The Screaming Skull, Revolt of the Zombies and I'm watching The Terror right now.  Of all these Carnival of Souls is the best, but that one is generally held in pretty high regard anyways.  Oddly enough, even though it was MST3Ked and it is pretty bad in it's own right, I liked The Screaming Skull more than all of the others I've watched.

Revolt of the Zombies was really, really bad.  It's simply not a horror movie at all.

Carnival of Souls is pretty good. I bought the Criterion Collection version of it several years ago.

The scariest horror film I ever saw was of an actual childbirth that was part of my sixth grade health class' sex-ed program. All of the eviscerating antics of Jason, Freddy, Pinhead, and Leatherface combined don't come close to the appallingly disturbing imagery I was exposed to on that fateful day. If you can watch that all the way through without too much fuss, you can watch just about anything.

I watched both of my kids being born. Sorry to disagree, but that's a beautiful thing. Those are the two moments I look back at on my life and I'm thankful I didn't miss either. Maybe that's why I can watch about anything. Ha!

I sure hope you're getting counseling for the PTSD, then.

Jesus H., your PTSD is worse than I thought. You're gonna have to be committed. But I guess I really shouldn't be all that shocked by your response; you carry around a fetus-shaped keychain, after all.

Despite all your obvious issues, I hafta admit you're pretty muthafukkkin' hardcore if you can somehow sit through all that not just once, but twice, and not wanna jump off the hospital roof to escape the unbearable mental and emotional anguish brought on by what you'd just witnessed. Kudos!

As for actual horror-ish flicks that really freaked me out, one that really stands out is Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. It was filmed and acted in such a way that I'd forget I was watching a movie, and thought I was a fly on the wall, watching the day-to-day routine of a serial killer and his partner-in-crime. What scared me most was that the kinda shit that went down in the movie could actually happen in real life-- and most likely has-- and I could very well be the next victim. And the ending... simultaneously disturbing and depressing.

Another disturbing/depressing flick is yet another based-on-a-true-story serial-killer flick, Monster. Admittedly, this might not really fit into what most would consider the horror genre, but I found it fairly horrific. The Journey song Don't Stop Believin' is used in such an ironic way here, I bum out every time it comes on the radio.

Well, they are a bit scary in a certain way...

...but it's what's bein' forced out 'em that's truly terrifying.

And then the ultimate horror: spending the next 18+ years raising the little snot. I'd rather get flayed open by Freddy's finger-blades than go through that shit.

Ha! :)  Speaking of scary vaginas.....anyone ever seen "Teeth?"

Wasn't that a Troma flick? Or am I thinking of something else?

Speaking of Troma: how about a little low-budget horror comedy with the creators of South Park? Of course, I'm talkin' about Cannibal the Musical!

I don't think so. This one was released in 2007.

Watched "Chopping Mall" last night and here is my take on it:

"The intended plot of "Chopping Mall" was deducted last night by those in attendance. Contrary to popular belief, a computer glitch from a lightning storm did not make the robots go insane. Actually, they were pissed that lab coat scientist #1 forgot to bring them hushpuppies. When this happens, clearly the only solution is to avenge this slight by slaying porking teenagers while leaving behind the celibate who wear bad jeans."

When I was 12 my bike's front tire came off mid-jump, leading to a concussion.  When I woke up the next morning in the hospital it was to a taped birth on the TV in my room.  It was literally the first thing that my eyes focused on, after awaking from a bruise to my frontal lobes.  Yes, it was scary as shit.  Years later, when my son was born, it was like the scene from Alien with the C-Section birth, but not traumatic in the least.  Big difference between ages 12 and 23.

I've seen a c-section birth on some basic cable surgery/operation show back in the day, and for some reason I didn't find it nearly as disturbing as a so-called "natural" birth.

BTW anybody ever see Christmas Evil, with Fiona Apple's dad in the starring role? Rather disappointing, with a bizarrely nonsensical ending.

Turner Classic Movies have been running black and white horror films off and on for the past month.  I've been watching as many as I can without my wife losing her shit.  I did miss out on Haxan which I've wanted to see for years now but for some reason just can't find the time to sit down and watch.  It came on at midnight as I was going to sleep and I couldn't make it any further than 20 minutes into the movie before I passed out.

Freaks is going to be on This Wednesday I think, so I'm going to set my DVR up to record that.  It's another one like Haxan that I've really wanted to see but just couldn't find the time.

Finally got a hold of Frankenstein's Army. My fears of torture-porn were totally unfounded. This is a really fun, purposely schlocky monster movie. Highly recommended for those seeking a "fun" horror movie. It starts pretty slow, but is totally worth it. The creatures are all really cool. Even my wife thought it was awesome.

Once again, time to break out the all-time scariest one yet.

Actually, I was thinking of diving into the Final Destination series. Judging from the few clips I've seen,  most of the deaths are so over-the-top and implausible, I gotta see just how lulzy the rest of them are.

Check out more ridiculous movie deaths here: http://www.cracked.com/photoplasty_1044_the-16-most-ridiculous-death-scenes-in-movie-history/

I remember watching the NASCAR speedway massacre from Final Destination 4 on YouTube, and exclaiming, "OH, COME ON! SERIOUSLY?!" at several points in the scene. Especially the one where a couple gets cut neatly in half by a pressure wave from a nearby explosion.

Rrrriiight...

Nice bump! I love seeing this topic come up every year.

I am once again doing my October film fest at my house (1 film per week) and I'll certainly be running these by you guys. Looks like I have 5 weeks to plan for and only 1 film on the "good to go" list so far. I had a vote off with my friends last year between Argento's "Tenebrae" and "Deep Red." The former was the top vote-getter last year, so I'll be doing "Deep Red" for sure this year. The 30th will be reserved for one of the classic horror titles. I did Steve McQueen's "The Blob" last year and I'm planning on something similar, probably an old Universal film for this year's finale.

I had a suggestion for a film called "The Gate," which I have never seen, but it looks interesting. Looks a little cheesy, but I'm cool with that, since last year's first film was "Chopping Mall." Ha!

I'll have to skim through this whole thread later.  Our Halloween movie watching nights have become pretty stale lately.  We've worn out all of our old favorites, and almost every new movie we try to watch turns out to be godawful.  Hopefully I'll pick up a couple of good recommendations from here.

You can't go wrong with the first few seasons.

I really need to try and organize what movies to watch beforehand.  Last time I spent nearly the whole month old Sci-Fi reruns on Netflix because I couldn't decide what I should watch.  Hmm, maybe there is something there.  Maybe I will focus on Sci-Fi/Horror movies.

They ended up continuing the series after they said they were done.

I can't remember if the box set i have is a trilogy or quadrilogy at the moment...

The first Final Destination was one of the most fun experiences I've ever had at a horror movie.  I was friends with a few guys that worked in a video store when that movie first came out while they were working.  The story is nothing special, but the deaths are pretty amazing.  It's definitely the kind of movie you should watch with a bunch of friends who also haven't seen it.

Aside from that, I've got a number of movies picked out to play depending on who's with me.  I'm going to watch Let The Right One In when it's just my wife and I, and I'm going to try to get her to watch The Others and The Orphanage.  I think I can get her on Nicole Kidman with The Others, but the Orphanage might be tough.

With my daughter, It's going to be Monster Squad, Para Norman and It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.  She's already seen the latter two, but I love all three of those so much.  I would watch any of those on a continuous loop.

When it's just me, the gates are open wide, but I've been on a real Vincent Price kick lately.  I just picked up a bunch of those Midnite Movie DVDs from a thrift and they're all staring Vincent Price.  I'm going to blow through those first, and then do some of the gorier movies I have like Frankenstein's Army and Audition.  Once October is in full swing, I'm going to go where the TV programming takes me.  I've found some movies I absolutely love just watching whatever was on, so I'm hoping to find a few others this year as well.

So, here is the list of films I've decided to screen this year:

October 2nd - Slaughter High (1986)
October 9th - The Lost Boys (1987)
October 16th - The Fly (1986)/Ghostbusters (1984) **vote night**
October 23rd - Fright Night (1985)
October 30th - The Mummy (1932)

Very 80's theme and of course ending in a classic.

Fright Night and Lost Boys still need to be added to my DVD collection.

They both hold up pretty well.

I watched You're Next yesterday. It wasn't bad, but I was expecting more after Patrick Klepek compared it to Cabin in the Woods. It's not nearly that "cerebral."

I heard that this was a good movie, because it was kind of cheesy and self-aware. Another similar home-invasion movie, "The Purge" came out around the same time and I've been really wanting to see that. My wife is not big into super scary, realistic horror films, so I haven't been able to watch it yet. She even held her hands over her face during cheesy-a#@ Slaughter High last Thursday.....  One of my favorite home invasion movies has to be The Strangers and I've always heard that the original "Funny Games" is super creepy and tough to even watch.

Anyone seen Yellow Brick Road?  Kind of gross, but still a bit scary.  Actually, I was quite surprised that it was actually watchable.

I hated The Strangers at first. Then I realized I was really unhappy at how unsettling it was for me, though it did require a ton of suspension of disbelief.

Funny Games is indeed pretty rough, and it's one of those "I'm trying to make a statement about violence" movies and that can get a little distracting.

I loved that movie, though I could not tell you what it was about. I might have to watch that again actually. That's a wtf movie if ever there was one.

Watched quiet a few this year:

Ghost Ship
Van Helsing - Saw this at the theater 10 years ago (has it already been that long?!) and its been on cable a lot this year.
Trollhunter - I was in the mood for a found footage movie and found this on Roku. The title didn't inspire much enthusiasm and I was initially put off by the sub-titles. However, I'm glad I gave it a chance because it turned out to be one of the better found footage movies I've seen.
The Batman vs Dracula - Again, the premise seemed silly, but Dracula was better than most of the villains in the series.
Carrie (2013 Remake)
VHS Viral - Been looking forward to this as I was a fan of the first two. Parallel Monsters was my favorite of this anthology.

I'm so excited to watch Trick R Treat tomorrow. Also I happened across my DVD of The Loved Ones, which I thought I had given away. It is absolutely infuriating that there isn't a region 1 blu-ray of this movie.

My weekly movie night has consisted of my wife, a friend and his wife, and myself every Thursday. It has been a blast!

Slaughter High - wasn't that great, but a campy and fun little flick.
The Lost Boys - holds up. Great film.
The Fly (1986) - first time I had seen it and it wasn't bad, more of a gross out film and though I am a big Cronenberg fan, I prefer the original with Vincent Price more.
Fright Night (1985) - great film with awesome pre-CG special effects, can't recommend enough
The Mummy (1932) - excited about seeing this one tomorrow night---Karloff!

Haven't watched as much as I should. All I think I have seen for horror this month, is: Cabin in the Woods and The Thing(80's).

How did you like Terror Train? I watched it probably about 15 years ago and really don't remember it. I may need to revisit it.

I've seen Dawn of the Dead, and it is a classic of course. I haven't seen the others.

Watched the first two Friday the 13th movies last night, because my Girlfriend had never watched them before.
