Title: Lined up this first Atari 8 bit Prototype....
Post by: A8scooter on July 16, 2013, 09:56:38 PM
I was talking to a guy about Atari games and he told me about this cart he had forsale. Its a Final Legacy Rev 5.3 Titled "Legacy". I know in my research there was a REV. 5.3 and 7.1 with 7.1 being a later version. The owner claims he got it from the original programmer himself as it was part of his personal collection and was passed over to the current owner over time.  I know Atari 2600 and 5200s had the lab loaner labels and I have never seen any in my research of Atari 8 bit protos. Nor have I seen any on AtariProtos.com's site. SO I figure this item looks legit. He was able to tell me some of the variations this cart is over the regular release version ( Blue text, No game over, different music, Title Screen saying Legacy instead of Final Legacy.  In my paperwork research theres a Beta 1 and Beta 2. I dont know if this differs from the 2 versions in proto form Ive learned about ( 5.3 and 7.1 ). Anyway I wanted to get your opinions on the cart. The insides are regular reprogrammable eprom chips.  Label looks well aged. Opinions welcomed.  Also what would to value be on an item like this?

Value, as always for prototypes, is based on demand. I've not heard much demand for Atari 8-bit prototypes, nor have I heard of much demand for Final Legacy/Legacy, so it's likely < $100. I've seen common Atari 2600 prototypes sell for $20, and other uncommons that were in low demand at $50. With that being said, I've heard very little in the collecting community as a whole for Atari 8-bit.

It looks legit though.

The price was south of $100 with shipping so I figured with what little i could find in reference it looked legit.  But I was wondering since I have never seen lab loaners for the A8 line I wanted a few opinions on prices and things.  A8 being a forgotten area of Atari I know there isnt as much out there ( found to say the least)  but collectors are far inbetween but it adds to the rarity and yet harder to sell and buy due to the limited collector base.

Prototypes are only worth what people are willing to pay for them. Considering I hand off what are considered "prototypes" daily, I'm somewhat jaded about them, especially considering that most of them aren't interesting in any way being review copies that are copies of the final product.
