Title: Favorite Subsets Post by: Fokakis79 on July 04, 2013, 06:26:52 PM This thread is to list your favorite Subsets in your collection. Please feel free to explain why it is your favorite subset, and what games out of the subset are the best. List subsets you are considering and or suggestions for others. I am hoping this can be a place for those venturing into the goal of collecting a subset to use a resource and guide. This is not NES only, this is for all and any systems. Let me know if I need to correct anything or add anything to the list.
Here is the list: Atari Brown Labels (Atari 400) Brown Labels ( Atari 800) Atari XE Activision (Atari 2600 ) NES Tengen Konami Silver Box Koei LJN Taito Hudson Capcom Black Box NES Super Famicom Squaresoft Dreamcast Sakura Taisen SHMUP PSX White Label (Collector's Editions ) Greatest Hits Black Label Black Label Squaresoft Long Boxes PS2 PS3 Xbox ( Original ) Xbox 360 XBOX One Day One Banner PC Big Box Cross Platform Zelda Majesco Accolade/Ballistic Atlus Pokemon Working Designs Other Romox (Didn't know where to put this one ) Variants Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: smith45885 on July 04, 2013, 08:30:08 PM I'm flirting with the idea of chasing black label Square games for the PS1.
Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: techwizard on July 04, 2013, 08:37:04 PM i'm going for all the zelda games. might add to that going for all the remakes and re-releases too, but for now at least one of each game. i'm also playing through the whole series in release order.
Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: GrayGhost81 on July 04, 2013, 09:27:57 PM I'm making a half-assed attempt at all Atlus games for the PS2. Well actually Rule Of Rose is the only biggie I don't have at the moment.
Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: Raidou on July 04, 2013, 10:37:26 PM Aiming for Squaresoft SFC subset as my first major goal as a collector. The Japanese Final Fantasy boxes are really nice, it's a decent size for a starter collection (20 titles, including Super Mario RPG) and SFC rarities seldom demand the same prices as US/PAL rarities. To date, I have all bar Front Mission: Gun Hazard and Rudra no Hiho.
The downsides to such a subset:
Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: OatBob on July 04, 2013, 10:49:03 PM Goal 1)
I'm currently working on the Sakura Taisen Dreamcast collection. This set is beastly, with multiple LEs (ex Type-A and Type-B), multiple types of LEs (the memorial packs), spinoffs (and more LEs!). Also, my collecting has resulted in acquiring a number of items that are suspiciously pink. Goal 2) Once a month, I'm trying to pick up a SHMUP title. These are a bit spendy, and I don't want to break the bank, or block myself from picking up other import deals. So, for now I'm sticking to an infrequent purchase schedule. Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: Fokakis79 on July 04, 2013, 11:09:04 PM I'm making a half-assed attempt at all Atlus games for the PS2. Well actually Rule Of Rose is the only biggie I don't have at the moment. Yeah isn't Rule Of Rose kinda spendy, I know a KOEI subset is quite daunting as well Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: A8scooter on July 04, 2013, 11:26:46 PM From my collecting aspect the favorite kinds of subsets to work on include:
Atari Brown Labels - Theres a bunch for the atari 400 line and a handful for the 800 line of computers. Keeping in mind that theres the rare in store demo cart included to complete that set. It brings alot of challange and fun to collecting. Atari XE Labels - While maybe only 33 carts complete this set there are some really rare and pricy carts to make this a challange. Also having Mario Bros in the mix will bring more people wanting this cart keeping in demand and making it difficult to get. My third in my top 3 would be the Activision 15 cart set. Once again so many great games keeps prices up demand up and supply difficult to track down on the harder find titles like PastFinder. I love collecting for games that really are worth the collecting and then gaming aspect . Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: slackur on July 05, 2013, 01:24:26 AM The main subset I collect for:
From Odyssey to Pre-Playstation, NA region, physical copy, no magnetic media (cassette, disk, etc.), good labels. CIB if box is not paper. Yep. Kinda picky. Yeah isn't Rule Of Rose kinda spendy, I know a KOEI subset is quite daunting as well Yeah and I haven't looked in a while but it looks like the price of RoR has spiked over the past six months. Guess I won't be getting it any time soon. Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: RetroRage on July 05, 2013, 08:52:37 AM I have 2 games to go in my Tengen subset, then its time to search for some gold at the end of the rainbow.... I Love the games made by this next publisher. July is going to be an excellent moNth.
Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on July 05, 2013, 10:30:52 AM I have a soft spot for alternate publisher releases, e.g. Majesco and Accolade/Ballistic. I enjoy the history behind why a new publisher had to reprint the title.
Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: TheSaintOfPain on July 05, 2013, 12:10:07 PM Personally, I'd have to say that Tengen is my favorite subset on NES. At the moment, I'm 4 away from a complete Tengen set, missing Toobin', After Burner, Fantasy Zone, and Ms. Pac-Man. After that, I haven't really decided on a subset to work on, but am leaning toward the famous Konami Silver Boxes.

But at the asking prices I can't see affording it any time soon.

Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: Crabmaster2000 on July 05, 2013, 01:59:16 PM After finishing up my Taito NES set I think the next ones that I'm most excited to finish are the KOEI (need two more), Hudson (need one more) and Capcom (need two more) subsets. 3 of those 5 games are a little spendy though so it'll likely be a while.

How daunting is a KOEI subset, I am thinking of either doing the whole U.S. library or maybe just NES or only Sega Titles first. What is your suggestion? Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: BadEnoughDude on July 05, 2013, 02:30:42 PM The closest thing I have is Atlus titles for the PS2 and PSP, though it's been a while since I've actively bought either.

I was referring specifically to KOEI on the NES. Bandit Kings of Ancient China, Nobunaga's Ambition II, Gemfire and Romance of the Three Kingdoms II are gonna be your tricky titles. The rest arn't too bad. I can't speak too much for KOEI on other systems if that's what you're asking. I'd imagine its the same on the Genesis too. If you just need one copy of each game that would be the easier way to do it. You could grab something like Gemfire for $15 on the SNES vs. $60+ on the NES. Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: Fokakis79 on July 05, 2013, 08:46:21 PM oh cool, thanks for the heads up, and yeah I think I will shoot for just one version of each title.
Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: 98PaceCar on July 05, 2013, 10:41:17 PM I've got a couple I've done and some I'm still working on. The first big one I tackled was getting a CIB set of the Activision games for the 2600. Still working on getting a CIB set of the Imagic games, but a couple of those are pretty brutal.
I've also completed (I think) the light gun games for PS1 and PS2. None of the lists online are complete, so it was a tough one to finish out. I doubt it's too terribly rare or anything, I just can't seem to find it. Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: RetroRage on July 06, 2013, 12:37:33 AM Actually from the looks of things (and correct me if I'm wrong, Shadow and Banana I'm looking in your direction), it looks like the only difference between the regular pac-man and the 10th anniversary is the box.

I believe that's right, but I'm really into collecting variations, so I'd love to have it anyway. You're talking to a guy that has 3 copies of Gyromite just because one doesn't have the TM logo and another has a slightly darker label. :P It's worse than just the regular cart collecting sickness. Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: wildbil52 on July 08, 2013, 09:43:58 AM Fokasis, how about updating the OP with a list of suggested subsets? Also, it looks like the Xbox One games that are launching with the system have a Day One banner on the front of the package so there is another subset. Has anyone mentioned PSX Greatest Hits games yet?

Actually, the manual is different too - it's Black & White. I know I've seen some MINOR variants for Tengen, where you have the Manufactured by Tengen text on the box and cart for some but not for others (e.g. Gauntlet, own both carts). Might be worth checking the address too. The original black labels are certainly preferable but there are people out there trying to complete the GH set. Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: SirPsycho on July 08, 2013, 12:41:18 PM Oooh that reminds me. PS1 white labels. The collectors edition bundles from back in the day. Those white labels are slick.
I know there's one for the 3 Crash platformers, 3 Spyros, Grand Theft Auto 1, London 1969, and 2, and one that has some shooters like Medal of Honor. Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on July 08, 2013, 02:21:44 PM You mean the EA Collector's Edition sets with Racing and Shooting?

I bought GH Chrono Cross (because it was cheaper), but now I go out of the way to get GH when I buy American PlayStation games. The green spines distinguish them from my PAL games on the shelf. For PS1 there was a couple of long box ones too. I don't have any of them but I do want to have them eventually. A good cross platform subset are the main series Pokemon games. I haven't played one I didn't like yet. Also if you have the original RBY in box, you're the coolest. Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: Crabmaster2000 on July 15, 2013, 10:50:01 AM Definitely add Working Designs to your list. That's a pretty awesome one to pick up games for.

Title: Re: Favorite Subsets Post by: Cryptid Collector on July 22, 2013, 06:59:37 PM I'm fond of unlicensed stuff. I have a nice like pile of maybe a half-dozen or so Tengen carts and a couple other misc ones.
The PS1 longboxs mentioned are nice too, I think i have 2-3 of those(one of them is Descent) |
