Title: Did you ever destroy a game by accident?
Post by: noiseredux on June 22, 2013, 08:13:40 PM
I did.

The Walking Dead, and I'm furious.

I am such a fucking idiot, I could kick my own ass right now.

I popped the game in tonight, and was light "damn my 360 is loud." I though maybe I should try to stand it vertical instead. Yup. With the disc in and spinning cuz I'm a moron. So I loaded up my save and got a message that the disc was unreadable. I took it out, and it was scratched to shit. Because I'm so stupid.

Oh the pain! Sorry to hear it dude.

Didn't you get it at gamestop? If it was pre-owned just bring it back.

Just unlucky really, I may have done the same. I mean I have done that with a Wii & PS2 in the past without incident with tricky to read games. So I guess the 360 hold the disc in place differently or something...

As for my story, well I used to love playing a Commodore 64 game called Ramparts (a Rampage like game). Problem is the game was a cassette game, and I played it too much... so it wouldn't load anymore. Oh well.

I did get it at Gamestop. New/sealed for $20 cuz of the pricedrop. And I didn't save the receipt. I don't know if I should try to exchange it. That's pretty unethical.

Ouch :( sorry to hear that noiseredux.

I was trying to look for something on my 360 while my fiancee was playing Fallout New Vegas. Picked the system up and it scratched the shit out of the disc. It was a pretty deep scratch all the way around but was able to get it buffed out.

Gotta love systems like the Gamecube where you actually pop it onto the spindle and the disc is going NOWHERE.

Haven't done that to a game... yet.

But I have done that to a GBA SP... a pearl blue one no less:

I still have nightmares about it some times.

It slipped from my grasp when I bumped into a doorway, and it broke in two upon contact with the hardwood floor.

Fortunately, I managed to scare up a nice replacement for a great price a few months later. But it had become my most-played console at the time, and the withdrawal symptoms after the breakage were brutal.

Dropped my SP a couple times on hard floors never had anything more than a small ding. Seen a Vita fly out my bag onto concrete and get 3 small dings. I really have a hard time believing a small fall shattered a SP. That look like it was broken in half by force or thrown to the ground.

It was from about four feet up. Perhaps it impacted the floor at a critical weak spot.

I forgot to mention that I had an Intec grip accessory on it like this one:

I don't know if it contributed to the breakage, but it managed to survive the impact.

Several months later, I dropped my new GBA SP with the grip on it, but this time the GBA survived and the grip broke.

Some sort of karmic balance at play?

In either case, I'm apparently very clumsy.

I was playing fallout new vegas and the console was on the floor and when I was walking out of the room I walked into the console and the disc must of been moving to fast because the game stopped running and there was a big scratch on it. Amazon was really good about it they sent me another at no extra charge.

That sucks noise :(

I just picked it up too at the same price, but luckily I have no desire to move my PS3 around while playing it ;)

I accidentally cracked the case of my Zombie Nation cart while cleaning it. That one stung a bit and I'd really like to upgrade it in the future.

While playing a PC game in college on one of the schools computers I broke the disc inside the cd-rom drive.  It must have hit something internal because it was spinning at full speed and then I hear something like shattering glass.  I opened the disc tray and tiny shards just fell out.  The disc was in a thousand tiny shards.  The school had to just replace the cd-rom drive.

By accident no. On purpose a few time. 1 has ended up in my pool. Another a neighbors yard. Plus some I have snapped in half.

Never!  You people may be spawns from hell.  Just kidding, don't believe in hell.  I tend to knock things off the wall while walking by and I have dropped cell phones and a laptop, but never a game.

That's awesome.  At least you destroyed with a bit of variety, which as we are taught is the spice of life.

Have I?  No.  Not even Chronicles of the Sword, and I hate that game.  My buddy did try to destroy our rented import copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 back in '89 by chucking it across the room.  Luckily nothing happened on that front ($200 deposit at the rental store!).

has anyone had any luck with resurfacing discs with toothpaste? I've heard folks swear this works. I'm not even sure I'd know what to do though.

I've heard many good things regarding the Coke/toothpaste method, though I've never tried it myself, though I watched a presentation by a kid in my public speaking class in '10 that swore by it.  It should be noted that I've only seen it done on music CDs and a couple of DVD movies, not games.

I want to know who decided it would be a good idea to smear toothpaste and peanut butter on a CD in the first place?

And that looks fine if you've only got one or two discs, but I'm sure we've all got way more than that. For what an actual disc buffing machine costs, they are completely worth the money. All that toothpaste, peanut butter, Coke, and baking soda has to add up over time.

I tried it on a copy of Battlefront 2 and it didn't work, but I'm not actually sure that scratches were why the game wasn't working, because it never worked to begin with.

Also threw Crash Bandicoot down a hallway once, it ricocheted off the walls a few times and flew into my parent's bedroom. I actually don't think it broke now that I think about it...

From what I have heard about this game, this is the best thing that could've happened to it! J/k, all kidding aside dude, that REALLY blows! It happens to the best of us though, my 360 is loud sometimes but I usually have my standing anyways. I never thought of it as a bad thing if it's a little loud though?

Anyways, I used to have that spinning dvd/cd scratch remover thing that I bought from Gamestop YEARS ago and that worked here and there on scratched up games I bought or "accidentally" damaged myself. Mine was manual though and you had to crank it yourself. Sucked, but like I said it did actually fix some of games and movies! ;) Good luck w/ this one man! Hope you're killing off some zombies in GA soon!

Fight Night...totally worth it.
I've broken controllers and console decks as a kid in fits of rage on the NES (went through 5 repairs on various NES decks). A friend of mine put a hole through his wall with an N64 controller. However, fortunately, most of my consoles as a kid were cartridge and I always treated my games nicely.

On my first playthrough of FF VII in 1997, I used a save point in the Northern Cave, and it turned out to be a badly chosen spot to do so.  I couldn't defeat Sephiroth, and I couldn't get out of the cave to try and grind out some levels and get better gear.   I snapped my poor controller in half.  Other than that, I can't say that I broke any game on purpose.

My cousin when he still worked at a copper mine took a couple of NBA Live 07 and dropped it in one of the holes that had explosives in it. That game got turned into powder.

A few times by accident, like when I accidentally dropped my copy of Smackdown!: Here Comes The Pain and stepped on it, cracking it into 3 pieces, or when I dropped my original white Gameboy Advance, loaded with Pokemon: Emerald Green down a flight of stairs and there was nothing left of the screen or the game save.

The only time that I ever intentionally destroyed a game was when I got so pissed off at Target: Renegade on the NES, that I ripped the game right out of the system, took it across the road where I lived at the time, and threw it into the creek that ran there.  If you've played Target: Renegade, I'm sure you completely understand, and for those of you that haven't: DON'T.

Here Comes The Pain, ironically this summed up what the game would have been thinking.

I went to pull my Rock Band disc out of the case and I guess I bent it too hard and cracked the disc on the inner circle so it barely reaches the data.  The game plays most of the time but every once in a while I get a disc error and kicked back to the dashboard.

some disc cases are ridiculously hard to get the disc out, i'm always scared i'm going to do something like you did.
