Title: I'm gettin married soon, rfgents.
Post by: RetroRage on May 11, 2013, 05:16:15 PM
86 days left.  Got most of the stuff out of the way, still need florist, cake, tuxes, and a few other small things. If i knew it was going to be this stressful and expensive i probably woulda just went to vegas real quick.

Married rfGenners, how stressful was your wedding?

Oh, you poor bastard. I am so sorry.  :'(

Next thing you know, she'll nag you into having a kid with her.

Oh, the horror.

I'm gonna throw in a sympathy card with the next shipment of perler beads.

Married rfGenners, how stressful was your wedding?

We were incredibly blessed throughout our wedding.  Instead of a bachelor party, I rented a campground with bunks and a full-sized pool the night before the big day.  All my close friends (except my beloved, of course) and I stayed up all night playing video games, board games, MTG, and swimming under the stars.  We slept in and then drove to a little church in the woods where our family had everything set up.  Pretty much everything was contributions from friends and family; we did pay for professional photography, but everything else we picked up on sales in the months before.  My beloved's dress was bought for quite a deal during a trip she took to Cuernavaca, Mexico.  (She happened upon a beautiful quinceanera dress that was far less expensive than anything here in the states.)  Our DJ was a friend who volunteered for free, and the service was split between the pastors from each of our family's respective churches, who did not ask to be paid.  The food was likely pricey, but the scale was pretty small and a few folks brought items to help pad it.

That was close to fourteen years ago; obviously costs would be greater nowadays, but we had so many friends and family contribute little (and some big) things that we not only had a wonderful wedding for next to nothing, but we really felt supported.  (Even though we know not everyone was a big fan of our getting married.)

Actually, the only negative I can think of is the fact that our own marriage has outlasted several other couples who were there.   :hmm:

I only fought for the venue of our wedding. The rest i left up to my future wife and mother-in-law. I basically showed up, got married, and drank. Lesson learned: choose your battles wisely, less stress.

My gf and I are talking about this stuff now.  We flipped a coin over who chooses the place. Who chooses the intro song first dance dinner music and who picks the last song.  Easiest and stress free way to do it. I got the intro song first dance  and last song. ;) this shall be fun.

Our wedding cost us less than $1000 total. It was very stress free with all the help from family we had. The only thing we wish we would have splurged on was professional photos. We ended up scrounging enough photos from scattered family memebers, but it would have been nice to have them all done by one person.

All in all our family on both sides really stepped up for the most part and made things go as smoothly as can be expected. We even had a rainstorm right before the ceremony (which was supposed to be outdoors) and everyone pitched in and we moved to a different indoor venue last minute and it ended up working out great.

We didn't have several things that "typical" weddings do though. For example both my wife and I have an aunt that we didn't want near a microphone so we went completely without a mic and were very happy with the results :D

For me the reception was more stressful than the ceremony. Making your way around to spend time with everyone and keeping the party rolling and fun kept me hopping. It didn't give us a lot of time to relax and enjoy it. If I had a recommendation, I'd say put someone in charge of keeping the reception flowing for the guests so you two can enjoy it.

Congratulations!

Intro Song: Pink Floyd - Welcome to the Machine (scares away the stragglers)
First Dance:  Led Zeppelin - Thank You (an under-appreciated love song)
Last Song:  Danger Danger - Slipped Her the Big One (when the in-laws are leaving)

There you go.  You're set.

Congrats Aaron.

I was thinking for music

Intro song - The Final Countdown

First Dance -  Over My Head

Last song - Knocking on Heaven's Door

This could get fun, but The Final Countdown is an epic song, whether you like 80's hair rock or not.  Anyone else want to recommend something for A8scooter?

OOH, can we fit HIM - 'All Lips Go Blue' into the wedding mix?

ask her with gaming pictures!

Wii U Mario Mii?

sounds close enough to the question doesn't it? if she doesn't get it then she's not the one.

I met Retrorage and soon to be, Mrs Retrorage, a little while ago. They seem like great people and I'm happy for them.

If you're a guy, and you're worried about the decision part of things in your wedding, you're doing it wrong. Your part is just to stand there, with a smile, and have your picture taken. Like eighty million times.

In my wedding I only made two demands: That we somehow incorporated "sword" toothpicks in the reception and that the bridesmaid dresses had a certain kind of "flair" to them  ;)

That's not to say you don't have work to do to get ready for your wedding but this is a thing the girl gets to be in charge of.

To answer the question at the top, sure, my wedding was stressful but not too much. We were so lucky as to have all our friends show up a day or two ahead of time and just hang out with us. I think I had about 10 guys staying at my apartment the day/night before the wedding playing games, talking and having fun. It was awesome. That was 10 or so guys that stayed the night, a few more that dropped in beforehand. My wife had the same sort of deal on her side of things.

The day of the wedding there were even more friends and all our families and we had a great time.

Now that I think about it, at the very end of the day, as my wife and I were leaving, a few of my "good" friends made a point to throw the rice at my face, as hard as they could. Watch out for that.

Um... hello again.

Okay, so I mighta gotten off on the wrong foot with my initial reaction to your impending nuptials. It's just that I have to maintain my rep as a cynical, jaded, antisocial near-recluse who sees little point in the continuation of the human species.

However, I think I have a certain redeeming feature: for some reason I really dig some of the sappiest, fruitiest love songs from the '60s, '70s, and '80s. So if you're looking to add some tunage to your wedding reception shuffle, might I recommend...

Because I Love You (The Postman Song) by Stevie B: Easily the best slow-dance tune ever produced.

Do You Want to Dance by the Mamas and the Papas

Silly Love Songs by Paul McCartney & Wings: too obvious.

Nite and Day by Al B. Sure!

Making Love out of Nothing at All by Air Supply: Good God, I think I might be gay.

Nighters...

I can spend about 10 minutes in the dorms around here and find you a good stripper for the reception. Or was it bachelor parties that have strippers?

Zag, you just crushed me with that Stevie B selection. I believe that was the slow dance jam during my middle school years.

Spent ~$200 on a dress, some makeup, and a very minor ceremony at the courthouse. Wife was due for major surgery the next day, and we'd been putting off getting married for close to 10 years. I told her we might as well get it out of the way before the surgery, so her parents came up and we had a few friends as witnesses. A friend of ours is familiar with makeup since her dad used to work in the industry with monster makeup, and she had a hell of a time trying to make my wife's face not look orange (she was starting to get jaundice from her gall bladder not working).

All-in-all, I would've hated a large ceremony - it worked out well for us. Less stress, and after all was said and done, we have the certificate of marriage.

Thats kinda bitter sweet.  You didn't spend a ton of money, but it wasn't under ideal conditions.

I, on the other hand, am looking at $13,000 and climbing.  Why am I doing this?

That'd pay for a pretty good night of hookers and blow.

Um, so I've heard.

Lucky we're getting help from our folks, but regardless I'm still breaking the bank a little bit to make sure her night is "perfect".

People keep asking me what i want for a wedding gift and i tell everyone "Flintstones surprise at dinosaur peak"
