Title: Overclocked snes super fx games
Post by: Drakon on April 13, 2013, 07:37:28 PM
I'm a hobbyist modder, I've managed to overclock the superfx chip found in super nintendo games with some pretty huge results.  To put it into perspective the default clock speed of the superfx chip is 21.4 mhz

Starfox 1 running at 57 mhz:

Starfox 2 running at 53.3 mhz:

Thanks.  And yes I have tried it but doom doesn't overclock nearly as fast.  Doom seems to push the superfx chip a lot harder so I can't get as much of a speed increase out of it which frustrates me haha.

Stunt Race FX is my favourite Super FX game.
I actually saw your videos yesterday.

Have you been able to replicate this result on physical hardware, or software emulation?

This is the real physical hardware.

That's impressive!

Do you have plans on selling cartridges with the overclocked chips, like Star Fox? I'd be interested in picking up a copy of Star Fox that actually runs decently. ;D

So it runs faster? I don't get it.

Yes - it runs faster. Think overclocking the processor on your PC.

But weren't the games designed to run at what they run at? I feel like I would be at a loss if I was suddenly playing Starfox twice as fast.

they were designed for the hardware, yes, but some games really pushed the limits. some overclocking would just make them run smoother (not necessarily faster), and at times where you might normally get slowdown due to lots of sprites on screen, with this it would probably handle it much better.

Well I give it my blessing then. ;)

Looks awesome. Amazing how much smoother all the movements are.

I can but they're not cheap.

Wow, this is really cool.  I'd be interested as well...I'm assuming the expense is more labor than parts...do you have a ballpark?

Does that answer your questions?

my price guide:

http://16bitgamer.forumotion.ca/t44-drakon-s-modding-service-price-guide

So you're paying for all shipping, buying me the appropriate donor cart, paying me 100$ to build and test the thing, then paying whatever shipping costs to ship it to you.  I have some new printed labels sitting around for starfox 1 and 2, I can add a new label for 15$ extra.
