Title: Do u buy games for systems u do not own
Post by: Missionfailed on March 21, 2013, 07:21:38 AM
Like when u are out looking for games and stuff or not even looking, and u come across a game from an obscure system or just a system that u never taken a liking to....do you walk away our are u all in for grabbing it up? I especially grab em up to try and find it a good home but its harder on disc base games cause u are never sure if they actually work. Case in point i found 3 sega cd games before i had a sega cd. Vay, Lunar 2 and a disc only willy beamish. Beamish was the only one with scratches on it and it ended up not working after i finally obtained a sega cd. :'( Sucks because i really wanted to play that one.

I'll pick up games for systems I intend to own eventually. That helps get the collection for that console rolling a bit faster. Otherwise I'll just pass on a game for something I don't own.

Because my collection is still on the "smaller" side I keep everything I buy. There's really nothing I can buy to flip or trade at this point in my collecting days.

Of course, when you do that you know you've made the move from gamer to collector.

I just started doing this, but not for the purpose of collecting.  I will buy games from other systems if they are cheap, and then I resell them or see if anyone here needs them.

Yeah, it's hard to pass on a deal or something you won't come across often.  Being somewhat new to collecting, especially with limited funds, I'm starting to find that when I pick up stuff that's not within my current collecting goals (especially a system I don't own), I sometimes regret it later when funds are tight and I can't get something I find that is part of one of my goals.  You can't pass on Lunar for the Sega CD though...I believe that's criminal in most states ;)

Sure do. I owned the entire Atari 7800 library for a year or so before I owned a 7800 system.

I tend to pick up stuff for systems I don't own, when I find them cheap.  An odd side effect of this is, I tend to find the systems for those games for cheap not too long after I buy the games.  Case in point, I bought a couple Sega CD games for 3 bucks each, and then found a Sega CD model 2 paired with a Genesis model 2 for 30 bucks.  Now if I could only get that to work all the time :D

If it's boxed, I'll make sure to pick it up since I'll need the game for the system eventually. I own 40+ systems, yet I've got games for another 20 I've yet to own. My wife and I collect hardware, so it's not like I won't have a system for it down the road - games, on the other hand, can often be hard to find locally.

I once bought an X68000 game in anticipation of grabbing an actual X68k, but that eventually went down the tubes so I wound up selling it.

i had a Saturn game and a couple original xbox games for a long time before getting either system.

I will but usually it's with the intent to flip em. I picked up a bunch of Master System games a few months back and I don't have one of those. I think I'm pretty good on consoles for awhile, though I do need to repair my Game Gear and I wouldn't mind picking up a Nomad at the right price. Even a PSP cheap also wouldn't kill me.

I have an SMS that may need the card slot cleaned/repaired if you're interested, since you need an SMS.

So do u guys shy away from disc games that have scratches?

Yep.  I've had several complete sets without owning the systems.  Just have to have one of each type of packaging.

My whole 2013 collection goal is based upon this thread, basically collecting systems for games I currently own. I figure I can always find missing pieces of the puzzle later on when the price is right.

no, unless it's really really bad. the only thing i try to avoid are deep looking circular scratches. radial scratches (ones that go straight from center to edge), from what i understand, aren't as bad as the ones that follow the curve of the disc. i've had some with dozens of radial scratches work fine, and others with only a couple small circular scratches not work.

Nah, I already sold the games. I don't really have much interest in owning one. I always wanted to Sega Saturn but couldn't find enough games I would enjoy personally to warrant a purchase. The only system I'm actively looking for is an Atari 7800 or maybe a PSP for the right price. Thanks though.

I do. Most PS1/PS2 games I buy cost me 1 or 2 euro each. Repairing one disc costs about 7,50 euro!  :o
So unless it's a rare (expensive) game, I'll walk away as fast as I can.

On topic: Yes, I picked up various NTSC games, although I don't have those systems.

Whoa.  Crazy... but impressive. :D

Like most of you guys are saying, I'll pick em up if they're in good condition, and definitely if I plan on getting the system.  I've grabbed few (three) Dreamcast games, but no Dreamcast yet. :(

I am like most on here. I will grab games, if I intend on picking up the system, but only if I find them for cheap.  I will also pick up games I do not intend on owning a system if I know the games is valuable.

I have several games and accessories for platforms I do not yet own. Most of the games and accs I buy, I intend to use and play when I finally get the hardware for 'em. Some stuff I'll flip for much needed gas money to continue doing my twelve-store thrift crawls. And I almost always buy' em cheap. 'Cuz... well, 'cuz I'm cheap.

I have a couple of Game Gear games and not the system. I'm not huge into Sega in general so I'm not in a rush to get one.

I bought a boxed program recorder for a Atari computer once because it was cheap and kinda cool, and I have some games on 5.25 in floppy disc that came thrown in with other stuff(I've got a old external Apple 5.25 in drive, I don't know if there's a way to rig it run on a windows PC or not)

I do, but I usually only pick them up because they're cheap enough and I figure I'll find the system eventually.  I've got 5-6 PS3 and PSP games and I don't have either system, but I picked up each of the games for right around $3 a piece.  I have 15-20 N-Gage games and no system as well.

Absolutely.  I had 2 Play Choice 10 PCBs before I had the machine.  In general, if its a good game at a good price, I buy it regardless of whether or not I have the system.

Yeah, I buy games for systems I don't own. I like getting new systems as part of this hobby. One or the other has to come first. I want to keep buying systems so if I don't have one now I figure I will in the future.

I'm very patient about my collecting, so I just pick things up when they are a good deal and match them up later when their counterparts are a good deal.

Right now I have 3DO, TG16, PS3 and Jaguar games waiting for systems to show up.

I do it all the time if the games are at a good enough deal. I enjoy collecting games almost as much as playing them and i can't pass up a non sports game that i don't have for $1-2 if I run across such a deal.

So do u guys shy away from disc games that have scratches?
Definately as long as it isn't a deep scratch or chips on the corner. Hell i even bought a resurfacing machine (http://www.amazon.com/JFJ-Easy-Universal-Repair-Machine/dp/B000RBE4B8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366134996&sr=8-1&keywords=jfj+easy+pro) for that purpose. Even bought the game cube attachments. So far there has only been one game that I couldn't save and that was Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter which I picked up for $0.75 and it has probably saved around 20+ games and countless cds ranging from a variety of consoles Xbox, Gamecube, PS1&2, and Xbox 360.
