Title: well this sucks Post by: Crazy_Opossum on March 14, 2013, 09:41:22 PM I got a free vic20 and apparently mice got inside the computer somehow and chewed the wires... I'm in the process of fixing it. and what intrigues me... HOW DID THE MICE GET INSIDE THE COMPUTER???
Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: Zagnorch on March 14, 2013, 09:48:51 PM Just luck I guess.
Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: The Metamorphosing Leon on March 14, 2013, 10:04:30 PM Mice can fit bout anywhere.
Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: Fleach on March 14, 2013, 10:34:45 PM That's a bummer. Yeah, mice can squeeze into almost any place. Good luck with the repairs.
Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: Sauza12 on March 14, 2013, 10:45:27 PM Mice can get into a hole smaller than the thickness of a pencil. Those little bastards are unstoppable.

Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: Izret101 on March 15, 2013, 11:35:55 AM Looks like there might have been some bugs living in it at some point too.
I'd shitcan it. Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: Crazy_Opossum on March 15, 2013, 11:39:42 AM well I guess the expression, you get what you pay for is true.... I payed nothing and got nothing
Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: techwizard on March 15, 2013, 01:16:28 PM kill it with fire
Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: Crazy_Opossum on March 15, 2013, 07:53:57 PM I cleaned it ... but it will never work obviously.... but I'll still keep it for display
here is it cleaned up Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: SirPsycho on March 15, 2013, 07:57:42 PM I must have missed this topic, try letting the board rest and fester in a bath of 90+% rubbing alcohol.
To me it just looks like a bunch of board wires are physically blocked by cockroach crap. But, it could be salvaged, and isopropryl alcohol is dirt cheap and can't hurt the motherboard and chips at all. I cleaned it off with alcohol for 5 hours and I came to the conclusion it cant be saved because. the motherboard is pitted from corrosion, the power switch is ripped off from the motherboard, and every wire is chewed to hell, and that's not an exaggeration and the resistors fell off ... like literally FELL off the motherboard. Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: SirPsycho on March 15, 2013, 08:13:02 PM Corrosion eh? Coca Cola.
I'm not joking. EDIT: Replacements parts can be found rather easy, if you're comfortable soldering they can go back onto the motherboard with little effort. Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: Crazy_Opossum on March 15, 2013, 08:13:58 PM even if its pitted?
Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: SirPsycho on March 15, 2013, 08:23:15 PM Every one of those chips is replaceable.
Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: NES_Rules on March 15, 2013, 08:32:27 PM Vic20's are dirt cheap. I sold a few boxed ones for like $10 each not too long ago. If I still had any, I'd be happy to send it your way.
Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: Crazy_Opossum on March 15, 2013, 08:56:24 PM I figured they were cheaper when he gave it to me for free...I didn't expect it to work but I always liked commodore stuff.. I grew up with one of their Amiga computers (cant remember which one exactly) ever since I wanted to get all commodore stuff... actually its what got me started collecting... also I have someone else giving me a commodore 64 too for free and I think it should be better shape than the vic because ... the vic was stored in an outside shed... the 64 was in a friends collection...anyways sorry to be random about this post
Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: NES_Rules on March 16, 2013, 07:41:41 AM Random? This is probably the most on subject thread in this board.
Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: Sauza12 on March 17, 2013, 12:41:36 PM I'm glad NES_Rules said it, but at some point it just makes more sense to pitch something than to put hours of work into fixing something. I usually try to save stuff like that too, but there's a limit.
Title: Re: well this sucks Post by: bombatomba on March 17, 2013, 01:16:10 PM Sucks, Crazy, but at least it looks crispy on your shelf. Plus, like you said, you still have a free C64.
I'll pour one out for it later, but I should probably wait for the snow to melt first (Baileys stained snow just looks gross). Maybe I'll drink it first, then pour it out... |
