Title: Shadow's RoD - Finally, progress!
Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on March 03, 2013, 11:07:02 AM
Lately, I've been expressing thoughts of getting rid of large portions of my collection because it's sitting around in boxes not doing anything. We moved into the house just over a year ago, and we've done nothing with the collection since then. We're constantly catching up on bills, so additions to it have even been incremental at best. My wife wanted to do something for my birthday, and she's been irked at how I've been having to move things in front of the room to even get around in it, so she decided to start getting a shelving system setup. It's nothing fancy, but it takes care of my #1 concern: having all of my games on the floor with problematic cats in the house.

While we were putting the shelving up, one of the cats decided to walk across a large portion of loose SNES games my wife had moved to get to the wall. He freaked out and started trying to run off. It doesn't help that he's a 25lb cat with little grace, and he ended up putting a crease in my Lucienne's Quest box.  :o
It doesn't look horrible, but my wife and I made sure to put up all of my expensive Sega and 3DO items on the shelf that night.

Shortly after move-in (2/25/2012):

If anyone needs a system box for Xbox 360 or PS3, let me know...I've got 5 empty PS3 boxes and 3 empty Xbox 360 boxes, plus another at work. I tend to pick them up before they get tossed out at work. :P

That's only half of the Genesis games up on the shelf. If anyone's interested in the shelving, the shelves are 96" and $20 each at Lowe's. The steel-colored braces end up being like $4 each (I think), and the middle support bar isn't needed - the shelves will hold 300+ lbs without that middle support. My wife ended up spending ~$100 on the entire deal, and it will support another 2 shelves. I'll be able to get another set across that wall with a little extra space, plus I'll have room at the top for my system boxes or, for when we have some money later, store display signs for the various systems.

We've also decided that I need to start completing some of my systems - I only have ~10 32X games left, with only 1 expensive title left (Pitfall 32X w/ poster). Time to finally knock out that goal. ;D

Glad you're getting a chance to work on that. It's a bummer when you can't get to or use your collection, I know all about that.

Another good thing about this is now I'll be able to put up pictures of my collection, It's probably closer in neatness to yours than the other super neat and tidy collections being put up lately  ;D

I know I'll get asked...
In the picture with all of the system boxes and other large boxes on the left - almost all of those are system boxes. There's a few large CE boxes over there, but those are all going to go up on the shelf here shortly.

awesome to finally get everything organized! the shelves look good so far, i've got the same ones but smaller for my currently hooked up systems below the tv, they work really well.

Wish I had more of the N64 system boxes. I'd love to collect all of the other colors some time.

I'd love more system boxes, but space is an issue for me :/  Although I think I might be able to squeeze an NES and SNES box in if I come across one...

I've always loved the colored N64 systems and their boxes, but I unfortunately only own the original console and the Star Wars console boxed.  As always, awesome stuff Shadow!

How do those strategy guides/magazines not fall over?
Anytime I get a stack of magazines over a foot tall, it slowly topples.

...the stack on the right actually did fall over between my wife and the cat. However, there's a ton of weight on it, which prevents the pile itself from falling. They can't slide if they're being pushed down.

I'm sort of in the same situation as you, in a much smaller scale.  I've been remodeling my room, but I'm still living with the parents.  I'm transferring and moving out in a year, so I'm sort of in a conundrum--do I simply remodel, or also accommodate for my collection?

Shadow, impressive collection!

Somehow I was under the assumption that you didn't have a lot of boxed systems, but I see I was wrong. I wish a had a room for my collection :(
All the boxes in the first picture reminds me of our attic:

Hope you keep us updated with your progress!

Hey, I see an ASCIIWARE stick box there. :P

I need to make more effort to get rid of a lot of the loose items I own, since they're extremely hard to display properly and usually end up getting thrown in containers or boxes. I made a concerted effort to take photos and heavily document the hardware I had before I moved, only to have the site go down and lose the information I added in November and December. I still have the photos, but not the information... I'll get around to it eventually, I swear, but 300+ controllers is a lot to go through.

Made some more progress today - we put up a new cubbie shelf from IKEA to store a lot of the loose controllers.

Hey, noise... look what I found again!

I wouldn't let him in the room...so he jumped in a box and was pouty most of the time we were in there.

Now, for some updated pics of the room:

Look, a walkway! Hey, Razor's Sega Genesis/Sega CD are sitting in that box. I think I've got some empty boxes I can shove it in now.

The new shelf is in at the bottom, and we put up a lot more of the boxed stuff that was sitting outside the door:

Still have a lot of progress to make...

Incidentally, I uncovered the box with a lot of my display items in it. I need to lay some of the posters out to flatten them again, and then frame them to get them up on the wall. I have promotional posters for Sakura Wars, Star Ocean, and Modern Warfare (signed promotional poster) that I need to get up, as well as some GameCube glass stickers like the Sluggers sticker in the photo. I'll also actually get to put out my GBA "kiosk" on the lower shelf there too!

That's the wife thinking she escaped the photo. Unfortunately, she moved her arm so I couldn't get her Batarang tattoo in the photo.
Also, forgot to mention the light kit on the fan is new. Now I have light in the room so I can work in there at night and drag out interesting things to send people!

*bump* It's been almost a year since I updated this topic... however, my wife finally has a job that she enjoys and pays decently, and we've started to narrow down her vertigo issues (vertigo is caused by migraines), so we decided that we'd jump back into fixing up the room. Apparently, so did this fellow, who (along with the other large male cat) love to knock everything over and crush cardboard boxes. If you can't tell, he's standing on some of my Game Gear boxes here:

Left side of the room, kinda how we left it from last time:

Right side of the room, after the trials we had with using the wrong shelving and tearing up the wall (and subsequently my knee which caught the shelf):

Closer look at the new shelving. We'll be putting up the companion shelves with the rest of the consoles, but for now I've decided to go with an "oldest to newest" ordering with the major brands:

As messy as the first couple pics look, I'm ashamed to admit that they're downright immaculate compared to what my collection presently looks like. Thanks for motivating me to get my sorry ass in gear, big guy.

But more importantly: no pics of the Skylanders collection? For shame!

Those are in my bedroom, Zag. After one of the cats ran over my Hot Dog and almost destroyed it, I put them up on a high shelf until I could display them properly. They're kinda stacked up quite a bit, and some of the game boxes are in the RoD:

Yeah... I wish it was in better shape. It's an original cabinet, but I need to put new red vinyl on the sides of it, make a couple small wood repairs on the particle board, and re-adjust the controllers since they came dislodged during the move. It has a 256-in-1 multicart in it, which is nice, but I'd like to get actual carts and marquees one of these days. It's in great shape, considering I paid $250 for it from a friend. For a working memory card slot and headphone jacks, I'll take on that work.

I'll need to get some shelves cut down to fit behind the doors where I'm standing there for a bit more storage, but unless I start putting standing shelving in, I'm going to run out of room. I may just make it library-style where you walk in and grab something and have another room be the actual "Game Room", with this being the "Game Library". It helps when you have 3 rooms to work with. :P

Thanks guys. I've had a few people walk in the room and they suggested new standing shelves as well for the games, so it seems like it'll turn into the library room.
