It will supposedly have 8 GBs of system memory.  8.  This is going to be seriously powerful.

Meh, I have 12 in my machine and even top of the line PC games only access 4 at most.

^Yeah, but 8 GBs of console memory is different than 8 GBs of PC memory.  I honestly don't see the point in 8, however.  I believe the PS3 uses less than 1.

Did they say x86 cpu?... isn't that less than the PS3... I might have mis heard

What really matters more than RAM is VRAM, and if the PS4 GPU offers 1GB VRAM then it will be at least on par with the most budget PC cards at the moment. I don't see many console games using more than 2 GB RAM at the moment.

No, not technically. The Cell processor was so much different than other CPUs that it made it hard to program for. By going back to the standard they're hoping their Dev Kits will be easier to use and bring PS4 back to the first system of choice instead of the backup like PS3 has been to the 360.

OK, I think I have finally watched it all between the two offerings. My take?

1. Hardware seems promising, but there is nothing here that is incredibly surprising. More RAM than I would have guessed, but it seems like a solid architecture. They seemed to have learned their lesson after CELL. Built in video encoding/decoding not terribly surprising either with Gaikai being a part of it. Nice to see them use it in the reverse direction with the sharing though.

2. Dual Shock 4, just integrating the move into the controller and adding a touchpad. I'm a little disappointed that there is no screen at all, but wasn't holding my breath. Had to chuckle to myself a little when I heard they were improving the rumble. Didn't these guys say that feature was dead with the PS2 at some point? ;)

3. 3D camera - They just took the final step from the slow incorporation of Wii and Kinect tech. Completes the cycle, and shows us that motion gaming is here to stay.

4. Games? Where there any? I kid, but just a little. Nothing here at all to interest me at this point. I am a little surprised at the lack of them, but no doubt we'll here more soon and they don't want to kill the PS3's title sales off.

Overall, it seemed subdued but solid. It left me with a lot of questions, especially with physical titles. I have to assume at this point it will still be Blu-ray. I've said before that if it goes all digital I am out. I'll keep an eye on it, and am interested to see Microsoft's retort.

The pricepoint and physical media implementation are the key features that I'm most curious about. Personally speaking, the streamed content focus, further integration of social features, and the announced IP sequels that were the focus of the conference didn't hold interest for me.  I'm curious, but so far Nintendo has more exclusives I'm interested in, and that surprised me.

Watching the press conference now. Must be a rerun. I like what this console has to offer the connectivity/social networking aspect is very intriguing. The power and capabilities of this system sound very promising. Although I must admit I feel like we're getting awfully close to the uncanny valley.

Watch Dogs looks incredible. I really like the concept. And a next-gen Final Fantasy has me all giddy.

The only thing that had me really psyched was when they said Blizzard was joining them on stage. I was thinking "Finally Diablo III!!! Now I'm gonna need a PS4". He then told me it was coming out on PS3 so all that excitement immediately faded. None of the games got me excited. :(

If games are still being made for PS3 and a PS4 is set to release within the year I'm a bit confused. Does Sony want us to jump on the bandwagon of the next generation because with something like Diablo III coming out on both Playstations I don't understand what Sony is doing.

I guess both will be supported for a while before the PS3 is dropped completely. In other words the PS3 is a Porsche and the PS4 is a Formula 1 race car.

There are some close up pictures of the DualShock 4 here: http://www.ps3trophies.org/news/news-9158-PlayStation-4--Become-Better-Acquainted-With-the-DualShock-4.html

I've never had a problem with prior DualShock joysticks being convex, but these look like they'll function better.

I was thinking to myself that the controller looks like it will be small and harder to hold, but the side profile looks the PSMove Navigation controller, which is very comfortable.  Also, triggers that make sense!  My fingers won't slip now!

I just mean that by Sony having two consoles available (especially one that supersedes its predecessor)at the same time what is Sony trying to say? Why release the latest, greatest device without it replacing the previous generation right from the get-go?

When has any console been released AFTER the death of its predecessor?
The US release of the Dreamcast is the only one if that i can think of. And i might even be wrong with that.

Xbox still got games after 360
PS2 got games after PS3
PSX got games after PS2
Wii is still getting games and WiiU isn't (lulz yea i went there)
etc
etc

I'll either get a Wii U or PS4. Although the system I'm most curious about is the next Xbox. How much does Microsoft love Kinect? Will they force it upon their next console in some fashion?

Title: Re: PS4 woot!
Post by: Duke.Togo on February 22, 2013, 12:40:06 AM
Since Sony has basically included Kinect in the PS4, why would you not expect it to be in the next Xbox?

Title: Re: PS4 woot!
Post by: Cobra on February 22, 2013, 04:16:20 AM
I do expect it, but I'm curious about to what extend. I know they won't ditch controls entirely and force anyone who wants the new Xbox to use Kinect as that would just out right kill the system... so how far do they go with it?

Title: Re: PS4 woot!
Post by: Duke.Togo on February 22, 2013, 11:45:18 AM
I would expect Kinect to be integrated to the same extent it is currently, with a much improved camera and detection system.

Title: Re: PS4 woot!
Post by: bombatomba on February 22, 2013, 04:22:49 PM
Well, one thing is for sure.  Looking over the specs released by Sony, it appears that the PS4 will likely not be receiving sub-standard ports compared to their competition (speaking specifically on the port problems associated with the PS3 architecture as compared to the 360).  Everything looks good, especially the RAM (the amount included is impressive for a console).  I imagine developers are drooling over that.  I'd also like more info on the video card.  The TFlop info is not enough to go on, as it invites direct comparisons with PC cards, which is not realistic (comparable to a high-end budget VC on a PC).

I'm really glad Sony is standardizing with more "off-the-shelf" type parts.  The crap they were pulling with the processors on the last two generations was a load of nonsense.  Now that they will be using AMD this means the price will go down more quickly, and games will (likely) be easier to make.  All in all this is great for Sony fanboys and apologists, and good for the gaming community as well.

Personally, I could care less about this.  I find myself interested, but more because I like new tech than anything else.  I also can't wait to see how Sony screws this up (the same goes for MS).  It's going to be an interesting year.

As many people have pointed out, it's exciting to see new tech.  I understand a lot of people are unimpressed, but what more do you want out of the system?  Better games, perhaps?  I know many are done with the FPS genre, but I was impressed with the Killzone trailer, as well as Watch Dogs.

Title: Re: PS4 woot!
Post by: Link41 on February 22, 2013, 07:46:27 PM
I didn't really care about the new social features one bit. I was more sold on the fact that developers will want to work on a more open powerful system. Hopefully it gets more superior ports this time. An HD PS2 if you will.

I understand where you're coming from Crabby. It reminds me of when the Vita was announced. Fancy tech, but they haven't really done anything interesting with it.

I don't know if I'll buy the console at launch, but I'm excited. The price is appealing with two SKUs one at $449 and one at $549. So it will be somewhat affordable from day one.

I like that the new Playstation is more developer friendly. Apparently the PS3 was difficult to work with. This could attract new talented/under-the-radar development houses to produce games.

You didn't miss anything. Price and launch dates weren't announced, but I sleuthed around the internets and learned this info. I think I got this from either Game Informer or Gamasutra. Launch is supposedly November.

Title: Re: PS4 woot!
Post by: Crabmaster2000 on February 22, 2013, 10:15:57 PM
If thats true I'm a bit surprised. After the PS3 and Vita launches I didn't think they would risk going over $399 at the most. I think that would really set Microsoft up to clean up in sales if it can launch for anywhere from $299-$399 around the same time.

That also means for me I'll definitely be holding off until the "slim" model launches after a couple years for cheaper ;)

What where the different features in the two skus? I'd assumed HDD size and maybe a subscription to PS+, but anything else?

Title: Re: PS4 woot!
Post by: Fleach on February 22, 2013, 10:27:49 PM
The two SKUs probably relate to hard drive size options. PSN data from PS3 won't transfer over so that could mean that PSN/PS+ is getting revamped (I know it will be more "personal" by provided better suited recommendations). Maybe one SKU will have a PS+ subscription.

I think the price is reasonable (but I will wait for a price drop) considering the capabilities on the system. If Microsoft is able to launch below $400 I expect that to come at the expense of sacrificing something integral to wow factor or user experience.

I'm a Sony (not a fanboy.. I like everything Sony) so I'll jump on the bandwagon when I can afford to.

I don't understand why these companies won't just release their consoles for next to nothing. They already lose tons of money on them, might as well lose a little more and focus on blockbuster titles and secure a larger market share.

It was the same thing with those K-Cup coffee makers, the makers were too expensive for most mid to low income consumers to bother with, but the real profits from the industry is going to come from selling the cups, not the makers.

Title: Re: PS4 woot!
Post by: Fleach on February 22, 2013, 11:48:42 PM
I guess if Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo owned the companies that make exclusive titles for their respective consoles then your idea could be plausible. But let's face it, capitalism is here to stay and everyone wants to make money.

Microsoft successfully ran a subscription based model of selling the 360 in some test areas not too long ago. They could very well put out a machine the is on par or even well beyond the PS4 and use a subcription based price point to sell it at a price that "seems" superior (like $99 and a year or two to Xbox live for low monthly payments) and I dont see the PS4 being preparred to deal with that kind of pricing option when its lowest SKU is $449.

That $99 Xbox 360 "deal" really upset me. If you did the math it worked out to something like paying for one and half 360 consoles by the end of the contract. I also didn't like having the online component forced on me. I'd rather fork over all the cash upfront or do layaway.

Personally I agree with you, but you'll notice I put the word seems in quotes. Typical consumers love to pay installments though it seems even if it ends up costing them more in the long run. How many people do you that buy cell phones out right vs getting them cheaper through a contract? Like I said the test run for Microsoft was successful so why wouldn't they use it as an option. Even if it ends up being more expensive than the PS4 over a period of 1-3 years doing payments I could see it outselling the PS4 de to the short sightedness of many customers.

You're smart. I never considered consumer misinformation as a marketing tacting.

I finally afforded a PS3 for X-mas only to learn PS4 comes out next X-mas .... owned :(

Join the club. I've barely had my PS3 a couple of years. I still don't even have a 360 and suddenly the new consoles are popping up.

On the other hand, I've been falling behind on the console curve because I'm becoming less and less interested in newer games. I only picked up the PS3 by virtue of the fact that it plays Blu-rays and a handful of exclusives I find enjoyable (Little Big Planet, Uncharted, etc.).

I suppose I'm curious about the PS4 but I need to see some games in action (and less gushing about specs) before I get excited.

Yup.  I was kind of surprised at how little we actually know about the system compared to before the event.  Everything is still just speculation.

We knew there would be a new controller, Sony already said they wouldn't be sticking with the DS3, and we knew that the hardware would be more powerful.  Besides seeing a couple of tech demos running off of a PS4 developer kit (a PC with architecture similar to the final PS4) we really don't know anything of substance.  Or, at least, not enough substance to be able to make an informed purchasing decision.

For me,  the increase in power/visual capabilities isn't really that exciting.  Once you've gone through enough new console cycles, you kind of expect the new stuff to look a lot better than the old stuff, and it always does.  I almost feel like the never ending cycle to have the most gigaflops and RAM and HDMIs ends up making me want to play 80s/90s consoles.  I enjoy the simpler times of just sitting down to play a good game without having to deal with the myriad of crap that surrounds current gen.

You youngsters with your "Cup and ball is so radical!" When I was a kid, we just had cup, and we liked it!

If Stick were published by Capcom, there would be 4 more versions of it with improved stick smoothness and varying grain textures.

Do you still get joy out of playing with your stick?

Time to raise this thread from the dead.

Official FAQ is out: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/10/30/ps4-the-ultimate-faq-north-america/

So far, the most interesting thing I read is this part about getting the day one patch on disc:
Quote
What if I’m not able to or don’t want to connect my PS4 system online?
PS4 owners in North America can contact SCEA Consumer Services at (800) 345-7669 to request a Blu-ray activation disc that will be distributed via mail.

For future collectors, I expect this disc to be in short supply. I expect everyone here to get a copy.

A faster blu-ray drive and 8 gb of system memory still have me excited.  I can't wait to see what developers do with it.

I've been slowly amassing an Amazon giftcard fortune via my apps and swagbucking, think I might nab a ps4 with it when it comes out. Should have about that much by then.

I'm a bit bummed that the titles I was excited about were delayed, but at least there are a couple digital games I can play to tie me over when the console releases.
