Title: Wii U Questions
Post by: Antimind on December 16, 2012, 06:59:55 PM

So my Wii pooped. It's 100% worthless. I bought quite a few VC/WiiWare titles. From everything I've read, there's no way to transfer those to a Wii U except by using transfer using a working Wii.

Can a Wii U owner confirm that for me? Is it possible to download titles you've bought on a Wii from a shop channel? This is going to determine if I try to get a Wii U or not.

How weird is it to use that Wii U controller anyway? It looks quite large and not very comfortable.

I think you're correct about the transfer. It might be worth calling Nintendo's Customer service to see if they have an alternate option for you though.

The Wii U controller is actually surprisingly comfortable though. I really like it.

controller is perfectly shaped for comfort, and is lightweight so it's not clunky at all.

as for the transfer, i second what crabmaster said.

Here's an alternate question then. If Nintendo customer service isn't helpful...

Can Wiiware/VC games be bought from a shop channel on the Wii U? If nothing else I need to replace FFCC: MLAK/MLADL, Paper Mario, and Super Mario RPG.

You can access the eshop and Virtual Console on the Wii U. From the main Wii U menu you can get into the Wii menu. Just make sure you kept your Wii remote.

I hope this was helpful.

So the eShop contains the older WiiWare titles too? Can we transfer our old Wii saves via SD card?
If yes to both I guess I'm all set to upgrade when money permits.

As I understand it, you can only get the Virtual Console and WiiWare games from the original Shop Channel, right?  I don't think those actually pop up on the new eShop.  (wish they did though, quite odd.)

From what I understood Fleach to say, you can access the Wii's shop channel as well. I haven't purchased a Wii U as of yet. Nintendo basically told me to go screw myself...

As a day one Wii U owner, I can confirm that you can transfer everything via SD from your Wii to Wii U. Almost. I have had a big issue transferring my Rock Band 3 content. Most of it shows up, but some hasn't. And both Nintendo and Harmonix have pointed the finger at each other so I'm at a standstill right now. In terms of your VC titles, all of your Wii Shop data SHOULD transfer over to the new system and you should be able to re-download everything.

Yup. Great for people who have a working Wii. I've been doing some research though and it seems the transfer isn't 100% easy/safe to do. Some folks have had only half of their content transferred, and managed to somehow lose half of it. If your Wii is broken and/or bricked (especially if it was modded at some point) you can't transfer the goods at all. Nintendo won't do anything if your Wii is broken. They ask you to send it in for repair and if your warranty is up you have to pay. The entire transfer system is a crock of shit IMO. It's like Nintendo WANTS you to have to pay double or more to hang on to those Wiiware/VC titles.

I dunno, it worked for me, save for those few Rock Band 3 tracks.

Yeah, things don't look good for a bricked Wii. I had a look at the transfer process and it goes as follows.

The transfer process is handled by a free “Wii Transfer Tool,” which you download from the Wii Shop Channel to both the Wii and Wii U.

You insert a SD card into the Wii U. The Wii U then registers the system and SD card with an Internet server. Next, it prepares a partition on the SD card for the transfer. You then Put that same SD card into the Wii. The system connects to the Internet before copying the entire content of the Wii system memory to the SD card. It will simultaneously delete that content from the source Wii.

Finally put the SD card back into the Wii U. After a final Internet check, all the data and personal information on the Wii is copied to the Wii U.

So without a working Wii... things do look a little grim. Did they give any idea of how much the repairs for the Wii would cost?
