Title: What is the name of this arcade game?
Post by: wildbil52 on December 06, 2012, 02:51:47 PM
I'm sorry, I know this description is vague.

I remember playing a coin op arcade game in the mid to late 80s.  All I really remember about it was that it was side scrolling, it had a realistic look to it (can't remember if it had digitized actors or not) and it was in some sort of dungeon setting.

I think you were some sort of knight but you would only fight one opponent at a time.  Once you defeated one you would keep walking until you got to the next guy.

Again, I could be mis-remembering but if any of this sounds familiar, and hints would be appreciated.

There is a really good chance that this is it.  I remember the characters being more realistic, but it's probably just the way I was remembering it.  Thanks!

Yeah, back when graphics were still evolving and we were young I think our imaginations filled in the gaps.

When I was a kid I played the C64 version of Batman to death.

Then one day when I was over a friends house I saw the Amiga version and I was so amazed at how it looked so life like and remembered it that way until searching for it on the net one day.

See if anyone can dig this up...

I remember playing a mortal kombat clone in the early 90s.  The only character i can remember was a cyborg dude, and his victory pose was him firing two guns into the air.

Let's narrow it down a bit... arcade game, or home console?

Not sure exactly, but the rip-offs of the time I remember were Tattoo Assassins and Survival Arts?

Arcade.  The only place i ever saw it was at this one skating rink.  I have no idea if it ever went to a console

I just spent the last 20 minutes wading hip deep through so many miserable mid 90's "extreme" fighting games.  The only ones that I found that might be close are a bunch of the lame ass characters from Blood Storm:

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nun6IqWGHKU

 or Orion from Time Killers:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9H4A2MIIy4.

The only problem is none of them fire a gun for their victory poses.  Jesus Christ there were a lot of really terrible Mortal Kombat clones back in the day.  I've got to track down copies of Timeslaughter and Pray for Death.  Pray for Death has Cthulu as a playable character for Gods sake.

Up your's Sauza, Time Killers rocks! I fondly remember going to a skating party at the roller rink. I promptly converted my entire $10 into quarters and went to town. The Genesis version sucked balls though.

Time Killers. Loved that game, just for the shear fact that I could cut limbs off with a chainsaw. :P

Could the game you're looking for be Bio F.R.E.A.K.S.?

Since BloodStorm was mentioned. I posted a pic of Johnny Cage playing it in the Random Photo Thread.

I played Time Killers whenever I went to the arcade too, but that game has not aged well at all. After you got over the fun of cutting peoples limbs off, it got old fast.

Time Killers just looked stupid once Samurai Showdown came to town.

Didn't Stryker fire his gun in the air when he won?  Are you sure you weren't playing Mortal Kombat ;)

So i just spent the last hour on youtube checking out all the awful, just terrible mortal kombat clones from the 90's.  Oddly enough, Survival Arts was probably the best one.

Does Street Fighter the Movie count as a Mortal Kombat clone?  I mean, I know that Street Fighter was already well established but they  used the same actor digitizing process to make it feel more like MK.

lol i guess yes.

Also from Wiki:
"Originally, Boon and Tobias were approached to create a video game adaptation of the 1992 film Universal Soldier[31] starring actor and martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme, with a digitized version of the action star fighting villains.[32] Intending to make a game "a lot more hard edge, a little bit more serious, a little bit more like Enter the Dragon or Bloodsport" than Street Fighter II,[33] Boon and Tobias decided to continue their project even after the deal to use the Bloodsport license fell through.[2] One of their own characters, Johnny Cage, became "a spoof on the whole Van Damme situation."[31]"

LOL, that should be the name of JCVD's autobiography:

"The Whole Van Damme Situation"

Considered starting a new thread, but I'll try with this old one. :)

Im trying to help a friend finding the name of an arcade game. Unfortunately he cant remember very much from it, so I really dont expect you to be able to find this out ;)
I'll quote some of the parameters he remembers.

So its an Arcade game.
Its probably from around ~1987. He remember playing it when he finished school at -89. (So sometime around this era)
He's into games like Galaga, and when I asked him to describe the graphics he mentions "better graphics than Galaga" and "not your galaga pixels"... "starting to look better than that" ... "fast moving realistic kind of looking".

About the gameplay he mentions "you are a dude who run from left to right across the screen. The screen remains centered on you, but the screen scrolls from left to right. You control the movement (its not automatically moving from left to right).
Different enemies appeared and he mentions "rolling bugs" ... "rhino looking things".
Yould be able to fire out a forcefield and your arms would stretch out in front like you were punching the forcefield out.
He remembers a "jungle type background".

Not many parameters to go with here.
Any thoughts on what game this might be?
Or any thoughts on any good follow-up questions I can ask my friend, that could help pinpointing this game? :)

Excellent! That game seem to fit with all of the few parameters my friend mentioned.
The "rhino looking things", and the "rolling bugs", and "arms would stretch out in front like you were punching the forcefield out". It all seems to fit pretty good.

Ill show this to him and let you know if its the right one. :)

It's not technically video game, but I could use some help remembering something from the 80's.

- I'm guessing circa 1987. It was a game, kinda like a board game, but with not board (I don't think).

- It was a dark colored, plastic tower with something like a vertical slot machine wheel in the center. It was fantasy themed; gold treasures, spells, skeletons, etc.

- I think it was battery operated and you'd hit a button and the slot machine would spin and you would play from the results.

- I think it also played a little music. I don't know the name of the tune, but we've all heard it. It's about 5-7 seconds long and it's been used in a bunch of older video games after you've died. (this won't help much, but it goes DUNN-DUN-DADUNN--DUN-DADUN-DADUN-DADUNN)

I've been searching for info about this game for YEARS. I'm guessing the name of the game has the word Dark or Tower or Dungeon in it. Any insight would be much appreciated.
