I don't know how many people who post in these forums have a Vectrex, but with dozens of people having some of the common games on this database, I figured I would post this.

In order to participate, there's only a few very simple rules:

1. On November 1, play your Vectrex.
2. I'll need your name and game(s) that you played.  Or you could supply these yourself for the wiki page.

There's other stuff that can be included for bonuses if anyone wants, like making a video for it, taking screenshots for an included gallery, including your scores, etc.  Full rules and if you want me to update the wiki page for anyone and such can be seen here:

That's cool.  At some point when I have a breather (too much going on right now) I should have a FURY page on the wiki for him, since he was one of the first homebrewers I ever bugged for that.  However, some video game book was coming out and he was going to be in it, so he wanted the info to be exclusive to the book until it was released.  And that was like a year ago, so that stuff should be free to go out now.  But both of us are pretty busy right now (probably more him than me!) so I'm not going to see about it right now, plus I've got other pages that I'll be starting on soon (I hope).

Does this mean I need to go out and find a Vectrex now?  *cries*

I'd say to check Recycled Gamer (http://shop.recycledgamer.com/) for their modded sticks, which they're kind of much to a lot of people, although I see where they have the modded Genesis controllers for $40 as their cheapest model now.

Control panels have really dropped in price recently and even a 3D imager with a boxed copy of Narrow Escape went for $255 the other day (I've seen those imagers go for over $1000 alone).  You could probably get a control panel for around $40-$50 if you snipe it.

That's still $40-50 more than I paid for the system...

Well if that's the case, you should get two. :P  Systems still going for well over $150.

Unfortunately that's what you're going to have to look at to pay in order to play anything on it.  And I'll be the first to admit that it seems like a bit, due to being spoiled with Dondzila's controllers at only $22, but those days are over with for now, maybe even a long while (or forever) from now.

Hey, you can feel perfectly free to start your own Day for whatever console you wish! :) The Vectrex just deserves it.  Plus I wanted there to be more to the category of "Vectrex events" on my wiki other than the dates of several original Western Technology employees that worked on the machine that have passed away :( At least there will be some more coming up for that category soon though.

I hate you guys...you mention Vectrex Day, and what do I end up randomly finding the next day going to visit a buddy? He fired it up, and I tried out Minestorm and Star Trek. This is the first time I've ever seen one in person, and I had a blast playing it. The Kilrathi Mothership tore me a new one though.

Works perfectly, comes with a controller and 15 CIB games. He's going to price it next week, when I get paid. How much do you guys think I should offer? Also, how much should I be drooling over a CIB Pole Position?

He could get quite a bit, since several of those games are not only somewhat rare, but also with boxes AND the original controller.

Yes, but how much SHOULD I OFFER HIM? It's not in their pricing system, and he tends to go overboard on estimates. He made it a point to show it off to me, since he knows I love consoles. The last thing he offered me that wasn't in their system was an FZ-1 with 40 loose games for $250.

Honestly, I would probably let him propose an offer first.  If you get away paying about $300, I'd say you did really well, $400 you still did decent but it isn't a steal.  Haven't seen a system under $150 in a while and that Pole Position is $125 at the least.  Don't neglect that Star Castle in there, that's another +$100 game and it's one of the best on that system.  Those other games typically go from $30+ each CIB on eBay.  Glad you found one man.  You won't be disappointed.

I've needed a reason to play my Vectrex more. It's going to get some play on Nov 1st now  :)

Maybe we'll even get out the second controller and The Wife and I can enjoy some two player Vectrex!

Nuts, I was supposed to have a video announcing this out by now, but the iPad that I was going to use to film it (I don't have a camera myself) is still out of state and something went out on my digital recorder, so I can't upload whatever I record from it onto the computer any more  :(

Does anyone have a camera or recorder that can just announce the date and read out the two rules and send it to me?  I can give whatever credit you want, like to a web site or YouTube page or whatever.  It's just that right now most of the "casual Vectrex crowd" (as I call them) that don't frequent Vectrex web sites probably don't know about this day and I'd like to reach as many people as possible.

Another thing to add since my last reply that if one of those is put together, do it on a day specific to the Lynx, like the day it was released, if known.

It's been a pretty hectic last 36 hours or so!  The page has been edited over 30 times.  My vector gaming forums have had over 100 guests in the last two days (it usually only gets a third that many, maybe a little less than half [40] at most), new members and several new members to the wiki.  Hopefully that'll follow with either some new game pages (common games such as Hyperchase, Space Wars and Armor Attack still don't have entries to them) or at least some Vectrex stories (http://vectrex.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Vectrex_stories) added (which are quite easy to do, just tell your story!).  17 participants came from over half a dozen countries that I know of, along with two videos being made, Mine Storm was the most popular original-released game (five players), and War of the Worlds, Vector Pilot and Vectrexians were the most popular modern day homebrews (three each).

In short, you just need to play your Vectrex and supply your name, and that's it!  There's more to it than that in regards to some bonuses, but that's putting it as simply as possible.

Actually, for anyone who can't play (someone else couldn't last year, as they had a Vectrex, but not a controller) can still participate!  Because I saw a post elsewhere where someone asked if it was ok to play on an emulator.  I figured at first that that wouldn't work, since it's Play Your VECTREX Day (not a fake one), but then, there is an Honorable mentions section, so I figured that if anyone played on an emulator or the Vectrex Regeneration app they can go in that section.  Their numbers won't count towards the "official" ones for people who actually played but they can still be recognized though :)

Anyone participating today?  So far there have already been 10 people that did, along with some nice surprises, such as two people posting pics that were date-oriented, one of which held up a calendar page and the other was a handmade screen using the Light Pen!

I won't be able to until tonight, so I'll try.

Not going to happen for me today :( Between being at the store until 8pm and then going to my night shift at 10:30pm I have zero minutes to dedicate to my poor Vectrex today. Next year.

Star Trek and Mine Storm, the latter of which was good in several ways, due to having one of the later edition U. S. Vectrexes with it that goes well past Mine Field 13.  I included a photo of the "Space Forces" present in that version (they float around like the regular "dumb Mines" but are spaceships actually...or something).  That led to quite a bit of talk on my gaming forums, as well as my planning on digging out the extra instruction sheet (just a page) on my version of the game so I can take a photo of it and put it up later (bumping up another old topic in regards to rare Vectrex paperwork).  So some of this ended up being educational for quite a few people!

The page will be updated soon (probably by Tuesday), although it has the same rules as the other two previous days: just supply your name and the game(s) you played on that day and that's it!  And this year it's on the weekend, so that's an added bonus.

Some interesting stuff so far already, being a couple of videos.  One guy also REALLY has a killer Vector Pilot station going on, having the wraps, overlay *and* a flight controller in his setup!

Sorry, been focused on writing up a level design for my college class. I'm going to try to break it out before the end of the night. Still have 3 hours!

Yeah, probably 90% of the page is added to within the first 48 hours of the event, not counting when I do a final wrap-up with game play totals, trivia and all.

As it says on the front page news, this date is November 1st!  Also, it was just discovered in the last year sometime that the Vectrex library hit 100 unique individual cartridge releases (finally, after over 30 years!).  So if people could make this Day a special one that would be great!

Well, we got a new TV shelf, and I had room to put my Vectrex on it. Tested the TV, and then pulled it off the shelf in my room. Turns out the cats got to it some time in the past 6 months, and we're cleaning off cat urine from the overlay I had on it, as well as the plastic and the shelf. Can't wait until I fix the lock on the game room doors...

We'll try to get some pictures after it's cleaned up, but not sure if we'll get it in the next 25 minutes or so.

I'm incredibly surprised my cats didn't try to attack anything on the screen. Then again, after powering up the TV and having one get static shocked, they wanted nothing to do with it after jumping all over the TV the past 3 days.

Yeah. I literally had 5 minutes before the end of the day, so it's what I tossed on. I didn't get a very high score - 16XXX.
But, I did get it turned on in the spirit of the event this year, considering I missed the past 2.  :o

That's good, as it looks like we won't even hit double digits in participants this year :|

I'll see about updating the page soon, just need to hear back from a few others first and then I'll do it all at once.

I got to 20200 in minestorm but I was really trying to get a good picture rather than go for a high score.

Also didn't have much time, really wanted too though. Life has just been busy of late.

Unfortunately the next Play/Vectrex Day may be suspended next year due to participation falling 50% over last time/we had our smallest gathering as of yet.  I don't think we'll even have double digits as far as those who played anything :|

So, there isn't much to see, although everyone should really check out my thanks to Vectrex people (http://vectrex.wikia.com/wiki/File:Vectrex100carts.jpg) letter that I created.

Should just be another day or so before I put up the majority of stuff that people want me to post for them though.  I'll post about it when that happens, although at least there are several other pics up too.

While I'm not sure how much effort it takes to put together, I would hope that you keep trying to support the day. I'll keep putting up pictures if you keep promoting it.

I know that it can be discouraging when you organize something and not many show up but this year could just be a fluke too. I like that you want people to play the Vectrex. It's about my favorite thing to show people and talk about in my house. Just this last week I got to show it off and talk about it to someone, we set it up for a couple kids to play on and talked about it while they enjoyed the laser sharp images and 60hz hum. Promoting it is something that should be done since it is an uncommon and unique game system, people need to see this thing.

Your 'thanks' letter was very nice.

I was able to pull mine off the shelf and show it off to my roommates, who had never seen one before. I love showing it off, though I need to actually PLAY some of my other titles. I've stopped at Mine Storm because I love the game.

Not a lot, really.


Part of it could've been that it was on a weekday, but they can't all be on weekends!


Developers--especially those making very good homebrews while making no money from them (Thrust, Nebula Commander)--really deserved it.


Do you know that Mine Storm has been THE most played original GCE/Milton Bradley game every single year that we've had this Day, hands down?

Of course. It takes the least amount of effort to fire up, and everybody owns it. :D

*50tbrd created the Thrust 1.1 overlay download specifically for release on this Day.
*In total, 21 different games were played. The total of the original GCE/Milton Bradley games was seven while the total number of homebrews was 14. The top original games included Mine Storm (with four players total), Berzerk, Hyperchase and Polar Rescue (two each). Homebrews, on the other hand, had only one player each, making this the first time ever since the Day was held to not have a top homebrew.  I would say that's really odd, but then we didn't have many participants.
*Four unfinished/demo games were also played, being Blocks, Robot Arena, Stip and Xylo.  I found Xylo to be really incredible (with a link to the video), especially since I never knew Frank Herbert was working on it (I thought the only unfinished game he had was Berzerk Arena).

Since we moved in the last year, most of my Vectrex games are in a box waiting until I have time to set up a new game room, so Minestorm was the only thing we played for 'Vectrex-day' this year. 7-year-old was really into it. Actually she wanted to play the next night too and we put Bezerk in after a few exciting rounds of Minestorm.

Not this year, unfortunately. Had a lot of things going on, but it's setup ready to play.

Well as long as all players (/the only one) is in then, as I just got word of several people in Canada (I think?) played, so we're about to hold the drawing.

So far, since Nov 1, the 7-year-old has wanted to play the Vectrex every day  :D
