I'm currently on a quest to grow my hair and beard out for a full year. I made this video today, at the 3 month mark:

First of all your quest requires no skill at all. Not something to be proud of.

I only grow my beard out during 'Manuary'. Which consists of the months of January and February. I remember posting the same thing under the body shaving thread, which made me feel like a sexy-ass beast.

OK so if you want my advise about growing beards... Don't shave, it's that simple. The skill of growing a beard requires NOTHING AT ALL. Just trim the neck area... Duh. Shit happens and you grow a beard when you're too lazy to shave. After shaving you can become beautiful and silky smooth.

BTW I'm guilty of bragging about pointless ability #5 on these boards, so it's not like I'm anything special, myself.

But, back to the subject: the longest I've gone without shaving is three weeks. It was pretty sad-- there were dozens of spots on my face where nothing grew at all. Just bare little patches of nothingness, giving my sad attempt at a beard a swiss-cheese look.

And I've never been big on the whole goatee deal, mainly 'cuz on most guys, it looks like they went down on it and came up with it.

A couple of things in response:

1. I'm not saying that growing a beard takes talent or skill, nor am I bragging about it. I happen to be a fan of facial hair and I'm making a thread so that other fans can talk about it.

2. The thread is called 'Beard Appreciation Thread'. If you don't appreciate beards, don't post in this thread. "It's that simple".

Rock out with the lumber jack look. It seems like a fun thing to try, and I probably haven't bothered to change my look much in the last 15 years.

I wish I could grow a beard, but I have some Cherokee in my background and it won't come all the way in.

The last time I shaved my whole face was August 3, 2007. Its been full beard ever since, though I do of course trim it and shave my neck and the edges on my cheeks.

I don't know about any other beard growers, but I've had several "nightmares" where I've shaved off a part of my beard by accident, like I somehow forgot I was growing it and just started shaving away.

Yes! That happened to me maybe a month ago. I had to check and make sure that my beard was still there in the morning.  :tinfoil:

I present to you, with much regret, a 5-month beard I grew in 2008 including creepy stare. I combed it out for this picture for greater effect, just before shaving it off. It was never trimmed, not even the mustache which was an incredible pain when it came to eating. If you ever compete in the RFG submission contest, just remember this beard could be competing against you.

The interesting part is that post people in this thread have since removed their beards...

FWIW, I've tried very unsuccessfully to grow a beard; I can't even grow a proper 'stache. It must be my Native American blood, much like Duke's. For some odd reason, even though that part of my family's long down the tree, I've got a lot of recessive traits from that blood.

I should've known you would start this thread lol :D

I was not aware that Native Americans could not grow beards, but thinking back to every movie I've seen with them, I guess none really had facial hair.

That video made me realize I don't remember what my chin looks like anymore...

As a kid, I wanted to grow my hair so that I looked like Bigfoot.  Hair down to my ass and a huge beard was my goal.  My hair never got past my shoulders and I still can't grow a beard.  Ah, the misconceptions of youth...

If I remember right, I may be 1/8 or 1/16 Native American (not sure of the tribe at this time), but I really can't grow any facial hair either. If I don't shave for a month, I still barely have any kind of growth on my face. Which isn't a bad thing for me. I don't shave because I'm lazy...

Hey I wasn't trying to be a dick. I dig the beard, I really do. You don't want to see what I look like with a beard.

For one my beard grows very course, kinda like pubic hair. So it doesn't like to be sexy on my face. The other thing is that my facial hair grows in as a different color than my head hair. My head hair is brown. My facial hair grows in as a 'reddish' color. So that kinda looks weird on me.

Other than that take it easy hXd. Sorry 'bout that.

Somehow completely missed this thread until just now. I'll definitely have to dig into the ol' photo album and see if I cant find some pics.

Just looked in the mirror with three days of growth, and came up with another reason to keep clean-shaven:

A good portion of my stubble is gray, especially on and right around the chin.

After 4 months and 12 days, I caved today and got my beard trimmed and hair cut. I made a lengthy Facebook post about it but the TL;DR version is that I did it to feel better about myself and look presentable for job interviews. I'll put up a before/after picture later.

I wish I could grow a manly beard/mustache combo.  Unfortunately, the beard isn't full and i only get that whispy Kid Rock white trash mustache.  I so want to get the Ned Flanders pushbroom.

That beard isn't complete in box. Needless to say, I am a little disappointed. ;)

Surprised that hasn't been burned off in the massive heat/fire.

The box and manual are on the shelf while being used.

I've always been under the assumption that you had figured out a way to play your games while keeping them in the box. You just shattered my perceptions of Tynstar :(

Sorry to disappoint. Games look way better CIB then just carts stacked on a shelf period. I would be more impressed with 400 CIB NES games then 600 loose NES games.

I just figured you found loose games so hideous that you couldn't even look at them when transferring them from the box to the console and found some way to just jam the entire box into your console to start playing ;)

I can arrange this for cartridges... optical media, on the other hand, would pose a problem.

The one topic on this forum about beards and you guys just have to talk about video games.

You all who posted pics look like you need a shower and a shave. I don't get the homeless look. So stop telling me to F-off when I give you a dollar :(

Reading this thread makes me think RFGen should do something for Movember,

i try to be clean shaven, not into the beard thing. i'm too lazy to do it every day though and usually have a few days here and there of being scruffy looking.

I look like I need a shave even if I've just had one and I'm smooth as a baby's bum. If I shave every day I get razor burn so I do it every other day and get a nice smooth finish.

I'm with you. I can't grow a true beard (grows in patchy at best), but I can pull off a goatee.

i think i could probably grow one if i actually wanted to, but i don't.

In general, if I don't shave for about 3 or 4 days, I'll have a full, albeit short, beard.  This is despite being only a couple of generations removed from full-blooded Cherokees and Blackfeet, but having stronger Sicilian/Italian genes.  And despite having a head full of brown hair, all facial hair comes in very, very orange from also having Irish in my blood a long way back.  So, like James, I too only have half a soul.  :P
