Title: nupoile goes to China....and comes back!
Post by: nupoile on September 02, 2012, 03:38:37 PM
I'm going to China this month for vacation and need some collecting advice.

This is not going to be a trip centered on gaming by any means but in amongst the friends, pandas and sightseeing, I want to try and get to a game store and an arcade or two. I want to know what I should keep an eye out for. I know China is really big into online gaming and piracy is an issue. Neither of those things interest me. What will I see as far as legitimate consoles and games? Anything?

I know about the Nintendo iQue but it seems like finding games is sort of a problem and they are basically clones of games we have here. I would really like to get some stuff I can both use here and is from the Chinese region. If that doesn't work, Japanese or Russian region stuff would be good too. Will I see Famicom and J-Saturn stuff? What should I look for?

Oh, and this is mainland China, not Hong Kong.

What would you look for?

There was an official Hong Kong NES and games. If I were going out that direction I would hunt those down plus load up on cheap Famicom pirates. If you run across any Hong Kong NES games cheap and wouldn't mind picking them up for me, I would be your friend forever ;)

That's the sort of thing I want to hear about. While we won't be in Hong Kong at all, maybe I'll find some that made their way inland. I still have no idea what is to be found, maybe old games are plentifully, maybe there is none to be found. I will definitely keep an eye out for you Duke, mostly for me but you too  :P

Maybe you can pick up a Chintendo Vii.

Well hopefully you find something that's real in China. Should be interesting searching for games.

There were official Chinese GB games, though they may be hard to differentiate between the pirates at times. Usually had part #s with CHN ###. Besides that, you could likely find -ASI Nintendo games there, or imports from Singapore/Hong Kong for Asia-region games.

Also, Addicted, love your profile picture.

@Tynstar I will look but I get the idea that all 360 and PS3 stuff is pirated over there. Hopefully I am wrong but will I be able to tell the difference between legit and copies?

@Shadow that is useful, can you explain -ASI more? Is that what nes/SNES part numbers end with?

@ Mr Zagnorch: will do.

@Addicted I may end up getting one of these. At first I thought it would be just what I wanted but it looks like getting games is tough. The games come on a proprietary flash card and were supposed to be inserted into a public kiosk to get new games. There was only 14(?) games released for it and all the kiosks are gone as far as I can tell. So to get any number of games I would have to test out several of those flash cards to see what is on them, while I am in China. And I think all of the games, or all but one or two, are games I can get on the N64. But if I go there and this is all I see, I am for sure getting it.

@ Razor I would get one if the price is right, that sort of thing isn't too high on my list, but again, if its the only thing I see....

No idea how to tell.

They have legit games over there. It's not that difficult to tell for the most part, but some are high quality pirates :/

For the Nintendo titles, -ASI is the Part # for Asia (Regionwide). Mind you, finding anything newer than N64 over there can be considered gray market, but YMMV.

This is not gaming related but...

... If I were to travel to China I'd see if there is an American town somewhere. (If one such thing does exist) You know how many cities here in the states and other countries have a China town. Maybe they have the opposite over there. Noting like a Chinese cheeseburger. See if they make it similar to ours. Hopefully its made out of beef  :D

We are starting this long trip shortly. I made a list from your guys comments and am going to do my best to search things out. Like I said earlier, this is isn't really a trip devoted to gaming but I figure I can look while I'm there, right?  :)

So now is the time to place your bets on what I come back with:
A new console?
Suitcases full of boxed games?
Nothing?
Loads of boring vacation pictures?

Anyways, I hope to have at least some stories of gaming in China to write about when I get back. Wish me luck.
