Overview:
Shadow Hearts Covenant is the sequel to Shadow Hearts and is often heralded as one of, if not the, best RPGs on the PS2. The player takes control of a demon/man/angel named Yuri and a likable cast of characters as they travel through historic Europe and Asia fighting such historic political figures as Rasputin. If that doesn't convince you to play this game I don't know what will.

This is the definitive PS2 RPG.
Do you like to role play? Do you like to take control of a likable cast of characters, none of whom happen to be an angsty teenager? Would you like to play as a complete badass with the ability to transform into various demons and angels and destroy everyone who opposes you, even Rasputin? Welcome to Shadow Hearts Covenant.
Shadow Hearts Covenant is not your typical RPG for many reasons. The first reason is that the main character is not an angsty teenager. The next reason is that the game is undeniably gothic, yet often hilarious. Yet another reason is that the plot mixes historic occurences with works of fiction. The final reason is that the battle system blows almost all the others out of the water.
Shadow Hearts Covenant takes place after the event of the original game, once again following a demon/human/angel named Yuri around Europe and Asia as he attempts to unravel conspiracies as well as find out a bit about the past. That is a simple overview to say the least. What I failed to mention is the gothic settings, unbelievably funny and unique cast of characters, beautiful cutscenes, and unique charm this game presents. Never before has an RPG, or any game for that matter, crafted together such an ingenious mixture of action, role playing, humor, and ingenious characters.
Beyond the game's quirky sense of humor, intriguing characters, and enthralling story lies a unique multitude of play mechanics. There is no overworld, only a map where you choose where to go. So no mindless and dull walking. You want to go to a dungeon you are there at the snap of a finger. Speaking of dungeons, each dungeon is cleverly designed and many consist of rather ingenious puzzles and backstories.
Perhaps the most recognizable feature of Shadow Hearts Covenant is the judgement ring which is used while fighting, defending, using items, even shopping. Essentially, it is a ring with various hit areas and critical points. A pointer will begin to spin and the player must press X as it approaches the critical points in order to execute the command(s). If failed, the chain or attacks (or action) is broken. Each playable character has a unique judgement ring, and each judgement ring can be customized and tweaked for more precision.
Shadow Hearts Covenant is one hell of an RPG. For how highly I think of the game I feel as though I am leaving out a buttload of important information. Oh well. Go out and buy this game, you shouldn't need to read a review.
