    Review:

In X-Com UFO Defense you control the Extraterrestrial Combat Unit, a secret multi-national alien defense army. Your job is simple: stop the aliens from taking over the earth. Sound easy? Well, it isn't. At the beginning of the game you have one base, ten solders, ten scientists, and five engineers. After a little while you get into your first battle. This takes place in cities, deserts, on farms, snow covered tundra, alien bases, and even your bases. X-Com uses a turn based battle system and controls with either a simple point and click interface, or a more complicated action button set up.

Throughout the course of the game you must research new weapons, equipment, armor, planes, space ships, and alien technology. Researching new technology is a vital part of the game. For instance, Lazar and Plasma weapons are much more powerful and accurate than bullet weapons.

Be sure to watch your stats in battle. Your stats are split into four categories: Life, Stamina, Time Units, and Courage. If you run out of Stamina or Time Units, you can't move that unit until your next turn. If one of your units' Courage runs out then he panics and drops his weapon, or goes berserk and starts shooting anyone or anything close to him. If you run out of Life, then you die.

You must battle your way through several battles on Earth until you capture an alien commander and learn that the aliens have a base on Mars. From there you must travel to Mars to destroy the alien HQ and ensure Earth's safety.

The graphics in X-Com are nothing special. Its all-2D Images displayed at a 3/4 down view to give it a 3D look. The cut scenes are cell-shaded images that are just basically drug across the screen; they do get the job done. Sound however is fairly decent. The soundtrack is just plain amazing: most songs are either rock, techno or a combination of the two, and the sound effects fit perfectly with the actions in the game.

While X-Com has many strong points, it has one major weak point - the loading times. The loading times in X-Com are just unbearable. It takes several minutes to get to the main title screen and about two minutes to load each battle. Its other main drawback is that you can play for months and not get anywhere in the game - either due to you losing battles, or you're just not able to find the parts that you need to proceed with your objectives.

When it's all said and done, X-Com UFO Defense is a fun game. Despite its loading times and poor graphics, X-Com can provide entertainment for many months to come. This is why I give X-Com UFO Defense a high 90%.
