Overview:
From the makers of Gran Turismo comes Omega Boost, a great 3D shooter with good gameplay and good graphics. A little on the short side but it won't disappoint.
Review:
Tan's review:
Omega Boost, a Mecha rail shooter released late into the PlayStation's lifetime, was developed by Polyphony Digital, otherwise known as "the Gran Turismo people" and released in 1999.
Gameplay consists of piloting a giant robot/suit through various missions in different environments. You generally have a few waves of baddies, followed by a sub-boss of sorts and a level end boss. During combat, you have 2 weapon types, you can lock-on and scan for enemy contacts and can strafe/boost to avoid damage from enemy fire and collisions.
It's fast, challenging and there's never a dull moment. It's a colourful, fluid game that really takes the PS1 hardware to it's max potential. Like most shooters it's a simple game but there's so much to look at and enjoy that you don't really notice and the time seems to fly while your playing. To match the technical prowess of this game are incredible sound effects and an opening sequence filmed in both CGI and live action and just further adds to it's high quality and production value.
It's one of those underrated marvels that really isn't appreciated for the quality game it is. It has really high replay value and is great for those wanting a quick action game fix that doesn't require many hours of commitment or re-familiarization of controls every time you play it. My only negative comment on it, is that back when it was released, I'd probably be disappointed if I paid full price for this game. It's short and rather simple. But as a $5-10 pickup for the classic gamer, it's a good addition to one's PlayStation collection.
