Overview:

Justice League Task Force is your basic run of the mill 2D fighter in the same vein as the Street Fighter series. The game features many of the heroes and villians of the DC Comics universe. The main vilian, Darkseid has designs on ruling the universe. In order to do this he must first conquer the Earth and destroy the Justice League.

From the back of the game box:

Batman vs. Superman!, Wonder Woman vs. The Flash!, Aquaman vs, The Green Arrow! Are you reading this right? For the first time ever, the DC Super Heroes battle head-to-head! Get ready to deliver your own brand of justice, and determine the ULTIMATE super hero!!!

  • Become your favorite Justice League super hero or choose evil villians DARKSEID, CHEETAH, or DESPERO!
  • Pit your hero's special powers and awesome signature moves against any character you choose... even SUPERMAN vs. SUPERMAN!
  • Battle from the ends of the earth to METROPOLIS, GOTHAM CITY, APOKOLIPS, and more!
  • Incredible, pulse-pounding one-on-one fighting action and super sound f/x put this game in a league of it's own!
Review:

The following is a public service announcement for video game players worldwide. Do not play Justice League Task Force. Thank you.

There, I just needed to get that out of the way. In all seriousness, Justice League Task Force is a very bad game. It's not the worst game I've ever played by any means, and it is definitely a few steps above Shaq-Fu on the Street Fighter II rip-off ladder, but not too many. You've heard a hundred games called it before, but this is definitely a Street Fighter II clone through and through. Unfortunately, this isn't a very good copy job, and Justice League Task Force ends up being mediocre at best.

The first thing that really jumps out at me here is the terrible controls. As a fighting game, it is especially imperative that your fighter is responsive and quick. Superman may fit that description in comic books, but the only way he and the other heroes would fit the bill in this game is if they were going up against a catatonic cows covered in butter. Though that would make for a pretty good fighting game, you won't get the chance to fight that battle here. Players get to take control of some of the coolest, fastest, hardest-hitting super-heroes in the history of comic books, but sadly can't actually fight with them as such. Not only is the control clunky and unresponsive, but the character animations are very choppy.

This brings me to the next point about (and paradox of) Justice League Task Force: the graphics. If you take a look at the still shots of this game, you'll probably think the game looks great. It does, except when anything is moving. The backrounds are great (a personal favorite is Cheetah's). The sprites are also large and detailed, just as they should be for a fighting game. However, as I stated above, character movement animations are just awful. Imagine Street Fighter II's animations as a good middle ground, where they are smooth but quick, and Shaq-Fu's animations at the end of the spectrum where animations are beautifully fluid, but overdone. Justice League Task Force's animations are at the other end of the spectrum: choppy, spastic, and slow.

Perhaps I was a bit unfair with the public service announcement above. It probably should have read: "Do not play Justice League Task Force alone. After all, I can't really sit here and say that it's all bad. Single player consists of either single fights against the computer or in a "hero" mode. In hero mode, your character must figure out why/how Darkseid has gotten the other members of the Justice League to attack you. The script for this is simply awful. After every fight, your character stupidly says the same thing in a slightly different way. First: "This is insanity! Why would a fellow Justice Leage member attack me?" Then: "Two Justice League members attacking me without cause?!!!" And later: "Another fake hero! Whatever is going on...." Sound redundant? It is, and that's the meat and potatoes of the "storyline" in this game. Granted, fighting games aren't exactly supposed to have great storylines, but when they're this bad, the dialogue would be better left out of the game.

How do the actual fights against the computer go? Well, the "AI" basically consists of the computer doing lots and lots of really cheap (or just annoying) moves that the average player could never dream of pulling off. Justice League Task Force is terribly unbalanced. I sometimes found myself able to beat the computer by throwing the same punch repeatedly fifteen times in one round, and then barely being able to get any hit in the next. This was on the easy difficulty setting, which I definitely recommend for a first-time player. On normal and hard modes, the computer is cheap to the point that you may start wondering if the classic "My controller is broken" excuse might actually be a legitimate one.

In two-player mode, this game is actually a little bit of fun. Nobody can deny that fighting as Batman, Superman, or any of the other great super-heroes in this game is really cool. Sure, the controls are clunky, the animations choppy, and the moves cheap... but in two-player mode, both people have the same things working against them. If you don't take it too seriously, you may actually have a little bit of fun with a friend. Otherwise, only buy this one as a collectors' item.
