Overview:
Developed by Compile, The Guardian Legend is part Shooter, part Adventure game. You play as Alyssa the Guardian, a female cyborg who can transform into a spaceship.
During the adventure elements, you would play in Alyssa's humanoid form with a top down style similar to games like StarTropics and Fester's Quest. You proceed through the dungeon moving room to room as in Zelda collecting power-ups and keys to unlock new areas.
Your character is equipped with a primary gun and a wide variety of powerful secondary weapons. You equip the secondary weapon from a select screen. Using the secondary weapon requires "chips" which are found throughout the levels. You can only store a limited number of chips at a time thus limiting the use of the secondary weapon.
Your character is leveled-up by collecting Guns (increases attack power and attack spread), Shields (increases defensive power), Rapid-Fire (increases attack speed), Blue Landers (increases maximum life), and Red Landers (increases the maximum number of chips). You can also level up the secondary weapons by finding second and third weapon icons that are dropped in various fixed encounters (bosses and mini-bosses)
Spread through the levels you could find shops (run by Compile's mascot, the Blue Lander) and ominous computer rooms that give you cryptic hints as to what to do next or further the limited, but effective back-story.
Other rooms contain gates that, when unlocked by various means transport you to the shooter levels. These levels function in a straight forward shooter style, however, the same rules in the adventure mode apply (e.g. you have your primary and secondary weapons). The action here is fast, fierce and is significantly more difficult than the adventure segments.
The game uses a very long and complex password system (think River City Ransom) so you can resume your game at a later time. Double and triple checking your password is critical before you power down.
