Overview:

Advanced Battlegrounds: The Future of Combat is a FPS game published in 2004 by Dreamcatcher Interactive for the PC.  This is a rebrand and repackage of an earlier game originally developed in 2003 by Techland called, Chrome.  There are a few additions to the re-release, such as a few more multiplayer maps and vehicles, but little to no gameplay fixes or graphical upgrades.

Review:

Advanced Battlegrounds: The Future of Combat is a funny little game. At first glance it doesn't look too bad, but once you actually play the game you will come to the same realization that I did; it is not a bad game, just sloppy. In fact all the compliments that I have for it have "for an FPS made in 2003." Take the graphics, for example. They are actually pretty good, for an FPS made back in 2003. And the weapon load-out and pivotable vehicles are decent, for an FPS made back in 2003. See what I mean? And the story, full of hidden conspiracies and a nanovirus are pretty good - yep, you guessed it - for an FPS made in 2003. But the aiming problems and AI balance issues aren't too bad either, for an FPS made in 1995. "But Bomba," you say, "This game was made in 2003, not in 1995." Yep, and that is another problem which eventually just leads back to the word I used in the second sentence of this review: Sloppy.

Another funny little thing is the packaging. It bears a very strong resemblance to another Dreamcatcher Interactive published game released only a year before: Universal Combat. While I don't have the information to back it up, I'm sure that the art for both games was done by the game person/team. In fact, when I first saw the box for Advanced Battlegrounds: The Future of Combat I assumed it was another Space Sim game and snapped it up. Boy, was I surprised. Don't want to be surprised either? Then I have some advice for you: Don't buy this game. Buy and/or play Half-Life 2, which is an excellent game for now (much less 2004, when it was originally released).
